S4 Windshield Header Bikini Top

PostPost by: Bobzilla » Mon Apr 22, 2024 12:57 am

I am new to this forum with a 1970 S4 Sprint clone.
It has a new vinyl top, but has not been used in 30 years and does not have the metal/plastic to go under the header on the windshield.

Since I don't plan on driving the car in the cold, how about removing the rear convertible top and making a bikini top like jeeps use.

The front would go under the windshield header and the rear would attach to the boot hinges.
I have a towel hanger roll bar in the back that it would also attach to.

I am wondering if there is a source for an angled flexible plastic that would fit under the windshield header and then be sewn in.

Lexan would be used in the rear attached to the cage.

Good sun shade when hot.
Dry enough with the windows up during the wet.

I will kick off the replies to your posting by querying what a 'Sprint clone' is?

If you are referring to the car in your picture, its not an S4 as generally understood (or is it am M100 body on a 2 seater chassis)?

For a non-Floridian what is a Bikini Top?

Ian,
It's a Mazda MX5 with some retro styling (or Eunos in Japan or Miata as called in the US) a sort of homage to the Elan. I think there were some "official" Mazda Eunos Sprints made for the Japanese market, some of them made their way to the UK.

A "bikini top" is a soft top that just covers the front half of the passenger compartment, the rear being open to the elements. Useful in hot countries where you need the shade.......
Kindest regards

I kind of like the idea. The metal / plastic that fits in the top at the front should be easy to fab up. All tops
purchased today have them already installed (at least the few I purchased did). They are not straight
but follow the curvature (left to right) of the windshield frame. It's two pieces, left and right, because
the interiro mirror rod is fitted in the screen frame, in the middle.
