Help: how to remove bolt spinning in bobbin.

PostPost by: TonyA » Wed Jul 05, 2023 1:07 pm

I am trying to remove the U strap that holds the wiper motor. Both 1/4 inch mounting bolts for this strap are simply freely turning in their bobbins and won't come out. The bobbins are not broken from the body. Guess this is quite common, any suggestions welcome..thx..Tony

I'm not familiar with the +2 but could someone have put nuts on the other side of the bobbin?

The other side of the bobbin is not accessible because it is in the void between inner wing and wheel arch

I don't recall there being bobbins for the wiper motor - are they not simply held by nuts and washers accessed from within the passenger footwell?

there are most certainly two bobbins to hold the wiper motor strap, and they're not on the bulkhead.they are in the inner wing .pls don't reply if you don't know...Tony

These are not bobbins.

Life would be easier if they were bobbins, but alas, the Elan was not engineered to make life easy :D

I do know as I'm 75% through my second nut and bolt restoration of a Plus 2 and I can categorically confirm neither used bobbins to secure the wiper motor mount.

..you have a most ungracious manner for someone relying on others to help so I won't be doing it again where your posts are concerned.

I too can confirm that my +2S130 has ordinary nuts holding the wiper motor mount strap, all accessed with some difficulty from the passenger( UK car) footwell. Definitely no bobbins!

Definitely nuts and bolts accessible from a void to the side of the bulkhead above the passenger footwell. Probably hidden by felt.

I can confirm that the two 1/4 UNF Nyloc nuts (as per the parts manual) that secured my wiper motor bracket were hidden under the original glued on felt, the remains of which I cleaned off afterwards with a scraper.
When I put them back, I replaced the felt with 10mm thick self adhesive foam. You can just do the job by yourself but it would be easier with two people.

Thanks: found the nuts .!,. To make things easier going forward, I made a small plate from stainless, welded two captive nuts (see photo) and glued it to the inner wing in the passenger footwell with pu adhesive ..Stronger, and removal of the wiper strap can be done easily from the engine bay with no yoga and no helper..
