Rear shocks/dampers Compression

PostPost by: mcole01 » Wed Jun 28, 2023 3:28 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to install rear shocks on an Elan +2 chassis. I have the springs compressed and the shock rod through the top of the top rubber mount but I can't raise the shock rod the inch that I need to thread on the bolt. I've tried a trolley jack under the hub but all this does is tip the chassis as there's little counter weight. I've tried a ratchet strap but I can't bring enough force on the small handle to raise the shock rod. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what you are trying to do are you trying to fit the lotocone mounts or fit the bolts through the "A" frame
if the lotocone mounts compress the springs as far as possible,I used screw spring compressors if the bolts through the "A"frame loosen the bolts on the chassis mounts and they should swing down far enough.

Hi
you need to extend the shock shaft fully up then re present again, if its slipping back pull out the shaft and put a strong Ty wrap around the bottom of the shaft, this can be cut off later. this should get you in.
I have used this method to fit my Spax shocks.

Good luck

If the shock rod has a hole for a cotter pin, use the hole and some safety wire to pull up
the rod.

Is the flat on the shock rod going cleanly all the way through the "D" hole on the top plate?

Hi,

Thanks to all the members who responded. The solution was to push the bump stop rubber further down the shock shaft. I lubricated the upper opening with a smear of silicone and force the rubber down the shaft. As you know the bump stop has very little compliance and it was preventing me from gaining the inch or so I needed to thread the top of the shock rod.
