s3 heater cable route

I just put my dash back in and now find the heater cable is about 1 inch too short. The sheath
will not go into the heater valve. It was not a problem before the dash removal. I have the cable
routed to the right of the demister hose, ie, to the center of the car. I'm now wondering if I should
be to the left of the demister hose. Looks like a real chore to R&R the cable with the dash in
place so before I do this, can someone tell me if I'm on the right track for rerouting the cable to the left of the demister hose?

p.s - I'm not going to pull the dash again and it looks like it's possible with the dash in place (if I need to do this).
