Nuts and bolts

Hello everyone,.

Im Dan Hunt. I have recently come into ownership of my granddads 1971 sprint. Sadly its in pieces. So heres my question.

Ive gone through the boxes, pags, draws, everything and it seems every part is there except nuts and bolts.

Im aware the elan will be imperial. Just not sure what size or thread types.

Im looking to. Put in a parts order and need an idea of where to start.

Buckland's book has a pretty good list, as I recall. If you don't have one, they're available again and, in my opinion, quite valuable alongside the shop manual.

Welcome to the forum Dan.

Many of the Elan fasteners can be “decoded” from their Lotus part number. The Wiki has an introduction to how it works, but if the fastener follows the system you can get the size and thread type for most everything that is common.

Welcome Dan,

If you can find an original parts manual, they have almost every fastener you can think of and a decoder of the part numbers. In addition, the exploded diagrams are excellent for disassembly and reassembly, even better than the manual.

Congratulations on your Sprint, you grandfather had excellent taste.

Thank you thank you everyone. Il start writing out a list today of everything i need to bolt on doors, bonnet, boot, seat runners, to get the car ready for transport.

The car itself had a restoration started some 25 to 30 maybe more years ago. So far it looks that drivetrain, brakes, suspension are complete. But im mentally prepared for the possibility that it may all need stripping down again. As it seems a bit seized up

Super project,
I suggest you try to split jobs.
E.g. rolling chassis first with the suspension. Next brakes and brakes lines.
After Engine Gearbox and Diff.
Not too many things at same time.
