Interior colors....

PostPost by: nomad » Tue Oct 25, 2022 4:52 pm

My S1 was painted Medici blue from the factory. I have none of the original interior except the crash pad. That pad is grey in color. Does that mean that the rest of the interior trim was grey as well with off white door cards??

Can't do that now but I am curious??

Kurt, the Elan 1600 workshop manual page 5A (Body) states:

'Carpeting-Rubber press stud fixing to floor.
Trim-washable PVC.
Colours interior trim - Atlas Grey and Light Tan, seats available in Black, Tan and Grey.
Body colours Fiesta Yellow, Carmen Red, Medici Blue, Cirrus White and British Racing Green.'

It would seem that your car had an Atlas Grey interior.

Thanks, Tim. Would love to put that back in. Oh well, not much stuff available to do that now.

That’s the seats sorted. And since the atlas grey vinyl is clearly available, I’m sure you could cover the trim parts with the material.

Worth investigating, anyway.

Tim

This is off subject compared to the original request and I note what is stated in the WSM, but I think that there were also red seats at some point for S2s?

Yes, there were, as many as around 50 cars were fitted with red interiors, discussed on here before.

However, I feel it is much more interesting to see if we can't get Kurt to replicate his car's interior as originally delivered! That is a challenge.

This photo appears to show black seats with grey trim and tan door cards. I'm looking for more clues from my photo collection.

Another early Elan with a similar looking interior.

Thank you Tim.

These photos are very interesting, especially the one with the view from above is very helpful to those of us with "garden finds" where precious little was ever recovered.

From what I can see from car interior, lighter coloured door panels are very useful to "expand" the perception of the car's interior (the early Minis were prime exponents of this idea).

Although I am building a "GTS", I plan to have an authentic looking S2 interior.

I don't believe that I can get the lower embossed door coverings in grey anymore and I just got a black padded dash cover. My grey padded dash is beyond restoration. I would guess that the elephant hide floor covering was always just black. Was the tunnel cover ever in grey? That I could paint.

Kurt. I believe the lower door material is available in grey from Newton Commercial. There was a Blue Elan 1600 at LOG 41 in Canaan valley that had been in the same family since new and the restorer ( from the same family) had just finished it. He had all grey panels and black seats. Beige upper door cards. Looked very nice but we both thought the grey was a little lighter than original. Don't remember about the center console. You could probably get some of the grey material to cover you crash pad. I have some pictures and his name. I'll contact him and see if he can get in touch with you. Good luck with yours. Gary

These photos are of an early Elan in unrestored condition, which may also help. They are from the old 26Register site.

Tim, have you got all those pictures from the old Type 26 site? I forget the owner of that very original car but they were a great reference.

It looks as if the elephant hide floor covering was a grey as well from your pics. Regardless of the trim I go with I think I will use beige door cards.

The lower door covering would not be embossed though would it?

For right now I really just need to worry about getting the car running! Taking up shop space that my son wants back.

Kurt, Dereck Harrison owned the car, I believe. I do have the other photos and can send them to you via email.

Jim has 'rescued' what he can from the old Type 26 Register site. See most of it here: https://elanregistry.org/stories/type26 ... index.html

A Grey/Black/Cream interior-ed S1 has recently come up on BAT, with good number of photos.
