Lifting points

PostPost by: steve lyle » Mon Oct 10, 2022 3:36 am

I'm considering taking the body off for general repairs to both the body and chassis.

What I'd like to do is lift the body off with 4 lines going up to pulleys attached to the garage ceiling joists. I figure the rear two lines could be attached to the outer seat belt anchor points. How about the front lines? Possibles might be the outer/front seat points. Or maybe somewhere fwd on the sill lattice. Anybody have recommendations, ideally that demonstrably worked?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve. I lifted my series one with three helpers, four of us. Body was completely stripped. No problem.. My son, his wife and I lifted his series three, stripped except for the windscreen. A little harder but not very hard. I lifted my +2 with an engine hoist and a block and tackle to the rafters with no problem. . attached to the rearmost body mounts in the boot and the tunnel mounts where the dash attaches. No problem and not tippy although I did have my wife holding it just in case. Can't find pictures off hand but I'll look if you need them. We same four turned the Elan over to work on the underside with very little effort. P S We four are all old. As I recall, the Elan body shell weighed about 180 # Gary

Steve,

Most of these questions have been covered many times before, its one of the very helpful things about this site, the quantity of information is great.

I find google search is best, and searching for pictures allows me to click on pictures that look hopeful and then follow the thread. In your case, have a look at:

edit: Make sure you click on the 'see more anyway' link at the bottom of the google results.

Good luck.

Lifting by the lattice is what I did with my DHC. I brought all 4 lines together just behind the windshield frame and used a chain hoist. I found it quite handy to have a single point as I could turn the body around while suspended. For reference my bare shell was close to 200lbs.

Hi Steve

I don't know if this is useful to you but I did mine by using straps underneath the body. You have to jack up the body a few inches clear of the chassis before you can fit them.
I then used an electric winch and pulley arrangement and it worked really well!
