Bonnet cable knob

PostPost by: cadwell » Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:25 am

I am fitting a new bonnet opening cable during my S4 rebuild. It has a plain knob with no lettering so I should very much like to transfer the original knob off the old cable.
It seems to be very well attached, so I wonder if anyone has successfully removed it and araldited it? To the new cable?

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

I transferred the original knob to the new cable when I did my restoration. My recollection is that the original cable was hard soldered or silver soldered into a slot in the metal part of the original knob. Having removed the old cable I repeated the process to fix the new cable to the original knob.

In my view the use of araldite would not give a good result. HTH

By the by, the 'Bonnet Lock' pull handles are now being reproduced by Rover P5 specialists Wadhams.

Here is a link to the relevant page: https://www.jrwadhams.co.uk/browse-p5-c ... 33937.html

You may have to make some changes to fit the Elan cable, but at least you would have the correct handle.

Thanks Tim, but I have now taken Mike’s advice, unsoldered the old cable and soldered on the new. Simples!
I’m afraid that as a very old codger I was just looking at taking the knob off rather than looking at unsoldering the cable.
What a wonderful forum this is, with such helpful people!

Makes you wonder, if Rover spares suppliers can supply an engraved bonnet pull handle, why can't Lotus suppliers do the same.

Yes, good point Tim. Now that Classic Lotus are about to start selling parts we may see a huge improvement in holding stock and quality so let’s see what happens.
