Plus 2 “Moustache” Grille Surround Install

I finally got my new grille surround from Paul Matty. It had been on back order for several months.

This version appears to be chromed brass rather than stock stainless. The two pieces are connected with an integral pin that fits in the bolting slot on the back.

No fasteners were supplied, and I never heard back from Matty’s on whether they had something available. SJ has some fasteners listed, but I was not sure if they would fit this trim version or not. The trim outside width is about 3/4”.

I went with trim clips available locally (in Canada at Lordco or Auto Value) in blister packs of two. Geno Part Number 17-2744.

These are equivalent to Auveco 2744 (Quantity 50) or Auveco 12959 (Quantity 15). The attached Auveco catalog page has the fastener dimensions. The 3/4” bolt length is shorter than the stock bolts at 1” length, but are doable. They use 10-24 nuts.

One nice feature of these fasteners is the bolt end centres properly within the track if put the correct way around. Drilling the holes in the centre of the fibreglass ridge properly located the trim edges.

I tried Nyloc nuts originally, but ended up with conventional nuts and lock washers as the Nyloc needed too much torque for the fastener spring clip. I used the stock quantity of four fasteners per side; two on the vertical and two on the horizontal. Carefully snug in place as too much torque on the thin fastener plate could distort the thin trim.

The clip fasteners slide into a track, and can be easily repositioned. I put masking tape on the trim face so I could mark the fastener position where I was sure I could access a wrench on the back side of the grille opening. You may feel the filled stock hole locations from the back side; I tried to avoid them to prevent cracking. I then transferred the drilling location to the body using the marks on the trims masking tape.

The whole thing actually went easier than I expected. Really like the new look. Now to get the darned pod motor fix completed so I can attach the grille.

I forgot to mention in my topic, that I cut up some large stainless penny washers and turned them into long ovals, about the width of the trim, to spread the load. These fit nicely to the recess inside the nose.

Just got in from work and did a few measurements.
Tip to tip is 610mm ( 24")
Top to bottom 140mm (5 1/2")
It would be a bit longer and taller if laid dead flat but it curves quite a bit side to side and up and down.
