Boot lid seal??

PostPost by: nomad » Fri Feb 04, 2022 2:07 am

I've fitted the correct boot lid seal on my S1 and would say that it is less than ideal. Anyone have an alternative that might work better?

Anything that seals well will likely will not allow the boot lid to close. The original seal design is amazingly bad at sealing. Really more of an anti-chafe device. And they shrink within a year or two so a gap opens up, so you glue the ends together, but then it shrinks more and pulls off the too short lip around the boot opening.

Just don't ever get the car wet and your okay. :D

I fitted a new original type seal 25 years ago, and since then part of my car washing routine involves mopping up the boot floor when done and leaving the deck lid open for a day or so to allow it all to fully dry.

And I still love Elans.

Best fitting seal I found came from Macgregor, in Canada. I see he also supplies S1/s2

Steve! How encouraging! Sooo, the standard luggage for a type 26 would be heavy duty water proof garbage bag's  :D Been there done that with ratty sports cars in my youth.

Macgregor might have an idea. Sprites and Midgets had a seal that fit on a lip like that but I think it would be a little high.

I have tried many seals for the S2 boot and by far the best was one I imported from your side of the pond.

The fibreglass on the new shell also needed adjustment but I thought this seal the most authentic to the original part.

That is the seal I have fitted and I'm not impressed. Original but could be better. Perhaps once its hot out it will be more compliant.
