New floor mats

PostPost by: MrBonus » Tue Sep 08, 2020 5:28 pm

Finding proper fitting floor mats for these cars is a daunting task.

The ones I had were all curled up (possibly original to the car) and frankly a hazard to get stuck under the pedals. So I took a flier on Covercraft's (no affiliation with this entity - they were one of the top google hits for "Lotus Elan Floor Mats") units and 3 months after my order, they arrived and the fit is pretty good. They have those little rubber nipples on the bottom the hold them firmly in place.

Just thought I'd pass it on for anyone else in need of a set.

Very nice. Do they sit on the carpet then? Were they custom or do you have a part number?

Yes, they are held in place with the stiff rubber dimples on the back. I just ordered them off their drop down menu (not sure the part number), fully expecting them to be a “generic fit” product but was pleasantly surprised to find them to fit like a glove.

One would normally expect to have carpet glued to the tunnel and foot well front and side with felt glued to the floor.
The floor mats use pres studs towards the back to hold them in place.
I cheated and just trap them under the seat hold down brackets.
There's quite a lot of movement likely on the driver's side.

Ah, good to know. As you can see, my car is missing a-pillar trim as well. When it was restored in the mid-'90s two owners ago, I get the sense the interior was the last part to go together and it was not completed with an eye for detail.

For what it's worth, these do seem to hold in place quite well, better than the units with felt on the back of them I pulled out.
