S3 interior door handle

How are the interior door handles secured on an S3? Attached is a picture of mine and what looks to
be a cut nail, about 1 inch long, that keeps the handle from pulling off. The 'nail', however just falls
through and barely stays in with the escutcheon in place.

So, what is the factory way, and/or 'improved' ways of securing the handle?

Slip the nail in place, then turn the escutcheon 90 degrees. The nail cannot fall out .

Sounds good. Just need to make the nail much shorter. Thanks!
