Hood Hinge Skid plates

PostPost by: pharriso » Tue Aug 16, 2016 7:55 pm

I struggled with this over an extended period so I am posting information here in the hope that it will help others.

I found no information in the forum on how the Hinge skid plates should be mounted on the hood (bonnet). My car was missing the skid plates & the end area of where the skid plates attach to the hood by rivets was damaged.

The skid plates mount on the underside of the bonnet & slide on Nylon bolts/nuts assembled on the body. The plates & bolts/nuts are readily available from suppliers such as Matty & Sue Miller.

When I bought skid plates from Matty I did not know how they were attached to the hood. Laying the parts on the hood they appeared to be too long, so I duly shortened them & re drilled the rivet holes.

I recently acquired a 2nd hood that came with skid plates already attached & I could see that I had attached the plates incorrectly:

So I have subsequently repaired the GRP on the end area of the plate, taken the opportunity to widen the area & attached new skid plates:

I've just been trying to re-attach skid plates today. How do you fix the pop rivet that is right next to the flange? My riveters nose is too big to get it in that close.
Thanks,
Milton

It's darn tight:

My rivet gun has a head a little under 3/4", have to push it in there!

Phil, Unrelated to the skid plates: in the pict. of both hoods, on the right there are scallops further rearward in the fibreglass; my S2 doesn't have these, does anyone know when or for what versions were they introduced?

S1/S2's have an entirely different Hood (Bonnet!) from S3, S4 & Sprints.

Thanks for providing this info about the skid plates. My car doesn't have them and I didn't even realize there was something missing. I'll add this to my winter project list.

Wait... I JUST acquired S4 9292 (last week) and was a bit miffed that someone had removed the front hinges from the hood.

You mean there aren't supposed to be any?

Is there a procedure for removing the bonnet alone without possibly chipping paint?

I have no spring on mine, because I have a lock at the windscreen end of the bonnet, so I can use the key to lift it enough to get hold of the bonnet top.

Then I simply lift it (rotating on its skids) until it is near vertical then lift it off. No paint chipping at all.
