Blanking Of Front Turret Access Holes

Dear all,
I currently have the front suspension off the +2 and have been looking at the front turret. It seems to me that I could solve the problem of mud getting into the bottom of the front turret by blanking off the oval hole in it (chassis is original lotus). I was thinking of using something non-permanent, like a piece of acrylic, anyone ever tried it?
Cheers
Tim
PS took delivery of Tony Thompson sliding spline axles yesterday, nice looking peice of kit.
