Bonnet connections on an S4

PostPost by: Vyvyanovich » Tue Oct 23, 2012 10:44 am

Hi everyone. This is a great forum and I'm happy to have a question for you. I've recently started restoring my '68 S4 Coupe. When I got the car the bonnet fixings were non-existent. Not having ever seen an Elan in the flesh doesn't help. I've bought the following parts from Mick Miller Lotus: 1x bonnet spring, 2x skid plates, adjusting bolt set and spring clips. I'm aware that I may need to glass in a strengthening ar of some kind to the underside of the bonnet itself. Now I just need to know how and where these bits all go. Any photos would be helpful :)

Hi and Welcome.

Sorry I cant provide photos as my Elan lost its original setup before I bought it almost 40 years ago. The Lotus Club in Qld has a number of nice Elans which have their original arrangements so you should be able to some in the flesh.

I am sure others here will be able to provide photos also.

cheers

Greetings,

That subject has had some fairly recent coverage. I hope these threads help until you see one in the flesh. Photos are included in them.

Skid plates: Aluminium strips pop rivetted to bonnet to give a bearing surface against the heads of the bolts.

Examples.jpg and

FWIW My S3 had plastic bolts/nuts similar to number plate fixings which seemed a good enough "bearing"...but I'm not sure if they were original.

Cheers - Richard
