Bonnet release lever

I'm trying to put a LHD s4 back together and have never seen the correct setup for the bonnet release. I've read though the archives and the manual without too much luck.
The (new) cable pull I have has 14" of length between one end and the other. If one end attaches to the firewall fitting, it seems the 'handle' end will stick out significantly past the dash. Surely I'm missing something.
If anyone could provide a photo, I'd sure be appreciative.
For what it's worth, my dash/crashpad is completely apart, so I should have optimal access. (any clues regarding 'tuning' the cable pull helpful, too).

Hi Chris
That release cable sounds like the one that is used on the S1 - S3, the S4 used a longer cable (maybe 36 inched longer) that pulls both ends of the latches with the one cable. I'll take a look around and see if I can find some photos...

I see.
On my car that little bracket is holding a fuel pump switch. I always though the hood release was on the other side, by the glove box. Now it's all making sense.

Hi Chris, I don't wanna stir a pot but I've never seen a hood cable installation like Gary's before. His written description sounds perfect, I think also some cables were two piece, you might have the section from the knob to the first release. Do you have a shop manual? Eric

Just for information...
I bought a replacement bonnet release cable a few years back, it was a pretty good copy but with a slightly smaller release handle without the lettering. I drilled out the cable on the old handle and used Araldite to stick the new cable into the handle. That was three years ago and it's still holding

On my 68 S4 the setup is similar to Gary's but the handle is hidden behind the ABS/plastic trim (not fitted yet) so it's not visible. As far as I know it's always been like that and seems to make a smoother cable run than Gary's - although it's difficult to tell. So when I replaced it years ago, I routed it the same.

I noticed you have two stalks protruding from the right side of the steering column. I presume one is either the direction signal or the dip switch. What is the other one for and did it come from the factory that way?

Well spotted Frank. No hiding anything from Hawkeye Howard!
It's from a GT6 or similar, the overdrive switch I think. Modified to 'spring' instead of click on/off, used to operate the air horns but I'm thinking I'll use it to touch wipe the wipers.
