Door mirror

I've found a thread on original door mirrors. Has anyone fitted anything they would recommend as an improvement, either in terms of looks or performance?

Mike,
as far as I know no Baby Elan left factory with a door mirror.
Sometimes the 70s Mini door mirrors (pic1) are described as the original ones. They certainly looks alright, are well made and thus are a bit on the heavy side. This keeps them vibrating when on the move and doesn?t serve to a good view. Pobably cracks will appear on the door skin after some time.
The same can be said for the really beautiful looking Talbot mirrors (pic2).
Personally I prefer clamp on mirrors (pic3 and pic4) which go on the side window frame.
Not very expensive, easy to attach, easy to remove and no additional holes to be drilled.
Well, the choice is up to you :wink:

Hi Mike and Juergen

My 67 coupe had one Talbot (pic 2) on the drivers side and I purchased one for the passengers side. ERROR!! could not see any traffic when mounted on the door.
Found a set (pic 1) on ebay in original boxes claiming 50's 60's type and are light in weight and stable at speed. They may have made heavier ones that may stress the door more.?? The Talbot bullet weighted more. Now the view is great on both sides. The mirrors are larger than the Talbots and I now feel safer being able to see traffic without twisting all the way around.
Using two mirrors balances the look.

The mirror I like best is the Raydyot aluminium racing mirror from the 60's. Photo attached of it on my Elan. Very light and stable at speed with no vibration even on an Elan door.

Dave Bean lists them in his catalogue part 017B 6140 page B3 though I got mine locally in Australia about 5 years ago now.

The raydot looks lovely, I've fitted Dino mirrors to mine, vibration free, and from my own experience works a lot better than the bullet-type, also in terms of adjustment..

I considered the Sebring mirror when I had my Elan repainted. However, I couldn't get the Sebring to work well on the doors where the previous owner had mounted black Turbo mirrors. I think the Sebrings will work on the fenders, as shown on this Ferrari, but I didn't want to patch and repaint my newly-painted doors... so I stayed with the Turbos. I'm happy with the Turbos, but I bet the fender-mounted Sebrings, painted to match the body, would look very cool.

Gary,
I hadn't considered a fender ('wing' in the UK) mounted mirror but the Sebring does look good and I am now adding it to list of options!
The only current cars that seem to have suitable mirrors are things like MX5s (Miatas) and Fiat Barchetta. I like the idea of trying electric mirrors but they are probably too heavy. The early MX5 mirrors, painted to match, may be ok.

Recently purchased two of the Raydot mirrors and now wondering how to fit them. Did you have to remove the window frame etc ? This is the only way I can see it can be done
