Sealing the pedal box

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:03 pm

I have tried press-stick but still have a leak. The unit has to come out again so I thought about using plain old silicone sealant but then thought this may make it difficult if I have to remove the thing again.

What do you all use?

The previous owner of my car had used plenty of silicone sealant and it came out with no problems after ten years. I cleaned up the surfaces and also used silicone sealant (black) to reseal it, and have no leaks that I am aware of.

Though now I regret that I didnt find the time to cut the top open and make a neat plate cover to access the clevis pins whilst it was out. This mod which many cars have makes future master cylinder changes an eaiser job.

Hi Robbie

I used black silicone sealant on mine, I also cut a hole in the top before fitting, im now very glad I did ....had to rebuilt my clutch master cylinder last week and it took just a few mins to get it off and back on.

When I had my pedel box off I made a rubber gasket 1/8" thick, I also used silicon sealent on both sides of the gasket when refitting the box.
I wish I'd heard about the box top modification when I was doing it. It sound like a worthwhile exercise.

Yeah it's been a handy mod.

I cut a large hole in mine I then bonded a thin rubber sheet to my steel plate cover then I riveted on.

I have successfully sealed my pedal box without silcone. The problem with it as with any sealant is it is difficult to remove. I have used a foam seal normally used to seal truck caps used on pick-up trucks. The material is self adhesive on one face, which I used to fix to the pedal box face. Tightening the bolts compresses the foam to give a nice watertight seal without the adhesive properties of silicone. This makes it much easier to remove in the future.
