Concentric clutch

Anyone fitted a concentric clutch to an Elan, if so was it an easy job and were there problems later

Yes, I have. It worked well. I have a second hand spare unit, new release bearing and correct cover.

Yes. I fitted a Titan unit with their braided hoses. I am what you might call "mechanically challenged" and it was simple to do, works very well and has the bleeder mounted high on the firewall.

Thanks guys, did you have any issues with alignments and how did you go about measuring the spacers/adaptors needed

I asked Titan which adapter I needed. Re set up it was straight forward as they specify a minimum amount of distance between the rear of the bearing carrier and the nose of the slave. I just set that bolted it all up and then sweated like hell until it was running and the clutch operated perfectly!

Greyelan, that sounds okay, do you find the action heavy or light and did you exit the pipes through the existing hole in the bell housing or make new exits. Also is your clutch an 8 or an 8 1/2” .

I have fitted the one supplied by Burton and it is a nicely made unit. I did not need any of the spacers that they also sell. For the time-being I have not tested it but I did note that there was very little play (fingers crossed).

I made a small plate to hold the (flexible) pipes (inspiration from nmauduit) as I was concerned these may flap about.

Clutch feel is normal and take up point easy to feel. I have an alloy bell housing and made a hole directly above the bleed hole to feed to the firewall. The input port is at 90 deg on the exhaust side so that line runs through the existing fork hole.
In summary, I have just put a twin cam into a Mk 1 Cortina Estate and made the mistake of not putting this clutch setup in it!

How much clearance (if any) is needed between the throw out bearing and the pressure plate?

I have a burtons item fitted to a Mk1 escort, the pedal travel was long and I think the piston just popped out, & lost fluid. But if I reduce throw out to pressure plate clearance, the throw out bearing will be riding on fingers of pressure plate.

Is the Escort clutch the same as an Elan clutch? On my S3 I had to remove the thrust bearing pad on the clutch cover otherwise there was no movement. It worked fine without it.

Do you have a thrust pad on the clutch cover?

I think the plate is slightly bigger dia, trust plate is not on fingers.

The clutch cover for an Elan with a concentric release bearing has to have the thrust plate removed so that the release bearing works directly on the fingers. The release bearing has a rounded face.

I’m looking at the titan concentric slave cylinder, did you go for the Saab or 40 mm bearing option.

I assume you used the “Hydraulic Clutch Cylinder Mounting Adaptor” but what size adapter did they recommend?
