Distributerless ignition - 36-1 on flywheel question

Can anyone help please?

i am looking for an off the shelf flywheel for the twincam that is ready-drilled with a 36-1trigger. Trawled the net and cannot find - is per chance anyone here using one? Or, can anyone tell me how they modded a standard flywheel to suit?

Have had a look for any more piccies but can't find any....so...

36-1 , not that difficult , each segment 10 degrees , cardboard pattern placed over flywheel and centre-punched through , placed in pillar drill with offset pivot , can't remember the drill size but with a depth-stop...
The extra ring of holes were made because it became that simple and we all know Colins mantra..

... and the pickup fits just perfectly in the removable part of the sandwich-plate , just measure the depth and use washers/spacers to give you the correct airgap.

Yes, I had pretty well thought this was how to do it - the only difference being that I would make up a jig with a central mandrel that the flywheel could be rotated for each dimple. But then I got to wondering if there were any off the shelf flywheels already drilled. The only one I found was a 60-2 that the Diktator system uses. Having ever only used EDIS with 36-1, this is where I will stay!

I am not totally sold on the idea of using the flywheel due to unease of adjustment, but then, once the VR is correctly air-gapped and adjusted closely, the ECU should be able to take over and get it spot on, and it is then out of the way and less clutter at the front end!

I fitted a DTA ECU system which uses the Ford coil pack (which I mounted on the inner wing below the airbox )

They supplied a toothed front pully which works very well :)

Thanks! The photos above show his description very well and is straight forward. Maybe tell me what sensor you are using - VR or Hall type? I take it that you have no problems with it?

Hal,

I also intend to use the flywheel as a trigger which seems to be what most vehicle manufacturers do. I intend to do what John Clegg did. A long time ago at least 10 years, I read a magazine article about this mod to a Ford cross flow engine. The article spoke of using a more recent Ford flywheel as a drill jig “ bolt the two flywheels together and drill through the more recent flywheel into the flywheel you intend to use”. Unfortunately the actual flywheel used as a jig was not specified.

Does anyone know which Ford engine a suitable flywheel can be taken from?

Purely my opinion, but using an existing wheel as a template is aterrible idea!

To make the dimples, you will need to use a pillar drill (a hand drill will do it you will get fed up after the third dimple!) lining up a pillar drill to go through an existing hole is impossible without an accurate guide jig. At best you will chip the cutting edge of your bit.

Much better to centre pop evet 10 degrees as John says. It is not necessary to have dimples placed apart to the nearest thou - the sensor only wants to count teeth, not measure the width of the tooth!

Sorry, I did not explain myself properly. The more recent Ford flywheel has the 36-1 pattern drilled into it by Ford.
The photograph that accompanied the article showed the two flywheels bolted together, and in place on a drilling machine (drill press). The author of the article drilled through the more recent flywheel using the same size drill as used by Ford and into the the older crossflow flywheel, with the depth gauge set on the drilling machine so that all holes are the same size and depth. The author claimed that when he had his crossflow flywheel balanced it was still correct. I was hoping to achieve better accuracy than I can achieve by marking out my existing flywheel.

No confusion Richard - understood perfectly! Maybe it is just me but I would find it very awkward! How John describes it above, sounds much easier!

On the subject, if/when you go down this road, come back to us before you drill the flywheel if you have not already done homework on the subject, as the positioning of the missing tooth is highly critical.

I used the back of the fasteners on a Fidanza aluminum for crank signal - not as many teeth as you wanter but the ecu was able to deal with it fine.
