+2 Boot Floor Mod

PostPost by: Bud English » Mon Oct 22, 2018 7:33 pm

There have been some recent threads on +2 mufflers and the attaching hardware and I thought someone might be interested in the mod I made to my boot floor. The mod effectively moves the muffler an inch and a quarter further away from grounding out, hides more of my Peco style muffler and decreases the distance between the tail pipe and the bumper.

I cut the top off the muffler bulge (for lack of a better term), moved it up an inch and a quarter, and glassed it back in.

I chose a cut line through the most vertical section of the bulge, about a half inch above the boot floor.

The edges of both the top and bottom pieces were feathered back to expose a good clean surface for bonding. Temporary aluminum tabs were pop riveted to establish the spacing and keep the top piece aligned during the glass work and removed once the first partial layup had hardened. I used, waxed, thin aluminum flashing on the underside of the gaps to keep those first layers of mat from sagging and removed it when the resin had set.

When the glass work was done, the mounting hardware holes were relocated and drilled. All the original mounting hardware and the heat shield still are used. My exhaust system hasn't been made up yet so the muffler relocation isn't a problem. I don't know if the mod can be done without modifying the standard system.

If you?re switching to an oval muffler, choose one with the outlet offset toward the center of the car. Modify the bulge to enlarge it on the side away from the spare tire well and center the tailpipe on the original recess in the rear panel.

Anyone done something similar for the early transverse muffler on the +2? It's a bit tight!

Not modified the transverse silencer recess, but have put some heat shielding inside it.
