I'm thinking Loctite 518 to seal the boss onto the cover and the gearbox onto the boss?

In case of what?

Could restrict 'slip n slide'.

Never heard of a drive failing there....

What's with the big lump of alli?

Drives that I have seen all bolt straight to the cover.

The magnesium boss gets the driven shaft of the gearbox back far enough away from the jackshaft so as to mesh properly with the driving shaft and the gearbox itself also clears the water outlet on the front cover and allows the cable to be routed forward to the the dial - just slavishly copying the original set up!
