Had this years first long cruise in my +2 today, great! went to Sweden and checked out a Lotus Europa (1972) with twin cam engine.(Its a restoration projekt) It is for sale and my Lotus buddy is thinking of buying some toy...maybe an Europa. Great day, great weather....and fun discussions on the way home. We talked about the possibility of upgrading the twincam engine volume wise. Have any of you guys gone down that road?
How? and what are the problems..overheating and so..?
regards
Otto

1760 cc is relatively easy with a long stroke tall block engine. If money no barrier then 2.2 L possible with special blocks.
How much else you have to change depends on how much you use the torque / horsepower a bigger engine makes possible. Getting big torque is relatively easy with a bigger engine, to get the horspower out of a bigger engine you also need to do a lot with the head to get it breathing better.
cheers

This chap http://www.wilcoxengines.demon.co.uk/ is the expert on big capacity twincs. I would love to put one of his 2.2l twincs in my S4, that would make it fly

Waow! great info! the stuff dreams are made of. Money is an issue
But dreams are free . The 1760 cc upgrade, is that possible with existing cam chain, and head? I am thinking, that it could be an upgrade one could make, if it only is an upbore, and new pistons it will need.
Regards

Have a look at http://www.lotus-cortina.com/library/block/blocks.htm - it is written for Lotus Cortina audience but the twincam is the twincam. Up to 1760cc is most readily done with a bored out tall block, timing case spacer and a longer chain - among many other things.

A long stroke Ford 1600 crank can be fitted to a standard 1500 block with low compression height pistons to get the 1760 in your existing block (provided it can be bored OK). Using a standard height block avoids the clearance issues and timing chain changes required with the tall block approach. No head changes needed but a good porting job and change of cams helps use the extra capacity fully in terms of power output.
If you dont have a copy of the Dave Bean Catalogue get one as it describes all the options for building various twin cam sizes.
cheers
