Honda S2000 engine and box

PostPost by: JonnyPlus2 » Thu Jun 15, 2017 6:24 pm

Hi Dave,

Good job on this!

I'm still gnashing my teeth over whether to use an S2000 or Twink in my 36R. As luck would have it, I can put off the decision for a few months as I will be building a rotisserie and fitting the 26R wings to the S3 shell (a non-trivial operation).

Best,
Jon

Jon, can I respectfully suggest you have your shell on the chassis and the wheels to be fitted once your conversion is complete, before you fit the 26R arches.

I know from experience that it DOES matter. You will be able to align the arches to the wheels. If you don't you may find the wheels are inboard / outboard of the arches and not where you want them.

Doug.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your wise words.

I have fitted the wings with about 200 little bits of sheet alloy and self tappers. Once I have done enough glassing so that the shell is strong enough to support itself on the rotisserie I shall screw the wings back on and confirm that they're still aligned and then do a little bit of glassing, just to locate them. Then I can finish the job in comfort without trying to make the glass cling while it's upside down!

If I knew then what I know now, I may have decided to just put flares on the beast. The 26R arches look great but Jeesus H Christ, they're a lot of work.

Best,
Jon

I'll second that, I did look at mine today, front ones fitted, one rear nearly finished, other still held in place with alloy strips and pop rivets, shell on side - its been there since before Christmas!

It is essential to initially align with body on chassis, then best to take body off, although possible without.

Best of luck.

Yep, I plan to do mine on a rotisserie so that the glass will always be laid on a flat surface. None of this upside down stuff for me.

Started fitting the pedal box with reverse master cylinders but also had to move it back several inches to clear the rear exhaust pipe.

Good job I'm only 5 ft 8 inches tall otherwise I'd be in the boot!!

Maybe I should have built a LHD car instead. (Jonnyplus2 take note)

I'm curious as to how the exhaust will run, Dave.

Hi Dave,
There's a bit of a trend here (in Canada) to drive RHD cars which was probably started by Lotus owners and continued by blokes picking up RHD GTRs in Japan and bringing them over. My mate Rob has an Elan and a 23 both RHD. Personally, I find that having to pull into the opposing lane to get a look at what's coming is a bit too much excitement for me so mine will be LHD.

BTW what ratio have you got in that Sierra Diff?

Best,
Jonny

i even make sketches for brackets and smaller bits ------------------- plus some of us were educated (brought up!) to start with a white sheet of paper. having a 3d mindset, you have your planes and components looking for the best positions and you can prevent NEARNESS where its unwanted. I,btw drew the first entire SAUBER car ever (C 8?; Kouros livery) - before my contribution in hinwil, they "lived" off of single part sketches!! --- where are my spares, asks the driver............................... plus hardly any templates sandy

I took all the measurements I needed but couldn't work out how to get the exhaust ports and inlet ports to change sides!

Hi Jonny
The diff is a 3.62 ratio.
Worked out best with the AO48 tyres and effective underdrive of the gearbox. The turn zero gear calculator does not seem to be active now

Cheers

you could've made a mock up out of that cheap ally tubing they use for small scale fresh air ventilation HOWEVER the thermodynamics and engine engineer would have to be present: oh yes, funding maybe an issue. we used to have wealthy clients in southern joymany (956/962) !! sandy

Hi Dave,

What size of tire are you going to use?
