Cosworth YB Turbo Into Elan

No problem Meg :-)

However, I will take issue with raised centre of gravity. Dampers are lower than OEM units. Also, moving from hub to inboard redistributes their weight advantageously. Mind you, as said earlier, the main reason was to enable wider wheels to be fitted (10.5")

Re the unsprung weight, there is a huge difference between moving a mass sideways and lifting it vertically, try lifting your car or a boat as opposed to pushing it :D

I suspect at high suspension frequencies the reduction in unsprung weight is less significant as broadly speaking the same inertial mass is being accelerated.

I know I havnt put that very well but hope you understand what I am trying to say.

Some more ammunition to shoot me with :-)

After 3 years in construction by others the carbon fibre doors didn't work out as hoped, so I am back to standard doors.

So, I plan to lighten them as much as possible. Stripped 6 layers of paint and now looking at where weight can be removed. With no window motors, metal window frame, glass (replaced by lexan) runners and motor support I should be able to remove a fair amount. I have set a target of 1kg per door over and above the removal of the above. Made a good start. 640 grams removal so far :-)

Help. How do I get my photos to display without the right hand side being cut off?

You can edit them to a smaller size before loading them. I wouldn't worry about it though. They show full sized when they are clicked to open. Besides, they are a bit lighter when clipped.

Anyone here have any experience of these. This one, recommended for my car, weighs 950 grams (2.2lbs).

I had a play with them at Goodwood revival. I bought any emergency charger from them and a friend bought a car starter. Really are amazingly good. But....... If the battery goes flat its toast. I use an odyssey in the exige which is more forgiving

Yes, that is the one thing you have to be careful about. If there is a residual draw on the battery you are in trouble if the car isn't used reguarly. A simple cut off switch resolves that issue. Battery can be left for a year if there is no draw on it.

It seems the perfect battery for me. Racing during the summer and only driving in the warm and dry. Disconnect and lay up for the winter and no hassle with trickle chargers etc.

I have a Poweramp that weighs in at 7kg (15.4lbs) so there would be a 6kg (13lb) saving.

Like a moth to a candle, I couldn't resist so I bought one.

Also bought an aluminium battery cable from Jegs. It is being delivered to sister-in-law in Anaheim as she is coming over in a couple of weeks:

A plus point with this battery is that I can put it anywhere as is weighs bugger all. Fitting it up front in passenger footwell keeps the battery cable short so a win win :-)

You could fit it directly on the starter with the sticky pads it comes with for mounting

Bob, my suspension/chassis guru came round this afternoon. We set the dampers up at 1 and a tad bounce, but this will have to be adjusted once body, engine, gearbox, etc is added.

Next job was to check out the torsional stiffness. To do this we attached bars at the critical points so we could measure relative twisting here as well as measuring rear spring compression.

Image

Took base measurements and then raised front right side 25mm and took new measurements. Repeated this for 50, 75 and 100mm.

I did a little Acad drawing and emailed it to Bob. I am awaiting his response.

We have already decided to stiffen the central box secion with 2mm S30 aluminium wrapped completely around it with siffeners to add rigidity. This will be glued and pop riveted on.
The body will be fixed to the chassis with more than the standard 14 bolts. I will also be stiffening the area around the door openings by gluing the carbon fibre inner side panels to the body (as standard these are carpet covered hardboard).
