Zetec starter motor

PostPost by: mikealdren » Sun Sep 20, 2020 8:16 am

I've been searching on here for details of a suitable starter motor for my Black top Zetec (Std 2.0l clutch and MT75) but all the threads are rather old. The Scorpio motor is suggested but that's and old Lucas design and I would like something more modern (pre-engaged & geared) and powerful.

Any suggestions please.

I have a Wosp starter motor on my Duratec, the Zetec has a standard Ford Sierra item which will get changed to Wosp if it fails.

http://www.wosperformance.co.uk/product ... lications/ they list Zetec with MT75, best to check with them for your gearbox and ring gear ( cable or hydraulic clutch?) as there are differences.
Kindest regards

A further alternative is a Brise concentric starter which I am running. It is round without appendages and for me, avoids the space frame chassis diagonal.
Not cheap but very good for me.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Sell a couple of your wheel trims and get a proper starter motor...

Not sure how different blacktop and silvertop zetecs are but my silvertop with standard flywheel and MT75 box has a Sierra DOHC starter.
Cheers

Hi John,
I looked at Sierra DOCH starters but I think they are the traditional Lucas design (LRS707) with a Bendix drive rather than pre-engaged starters and they're certainly not as efficient as the modern, geared starters.

In the UK Powerlite look good value

https://www.powerlite-units.com/high-to ... otors.html

I have a reduction geared starter on a 1840cc long stroke x-flow that just stalled the standard starter.

works well for me I also have a 50A alternator from them that I will fit soon

Agreed. Total waste of Moola. It just turns your engine over. It doesn't make your car go faster. If you need a 10,000RPM starter to fire your engine something else is seriously wrong. That OEM "Lucas" starter looks in fact like a Bosch pre-engaged design. A bit heavy maybe but perfectly reliable (it's OEM designed from the ground up for an everyday grocery getter engine started hundreds of thousands of times during it's lifetime after all). In fact it's probably more reliable than all the aftermarket stuff.
