Emerald ECU on Zetec +2

I have had my Zetec +2 for 10 years and had no problems whatsoever. However, i recently entrusted a local 'exhaust specialist' to make a complete stainless system from manifold to silencer. In their infinite wisdom they changed the bore of the system and ever since then i have had running problems. The car is fine at speed but will not idle and is clearly running rich at low speed.
Andy at Spyder tells me that the ECU needs to be remapped which they can do easily. The problem is to drive from the Wirral to Peterborough with a car that would not be happy in traffic jams is something i am not looking forward to. The other option is to have it trailered down to Spyder at a cost of around ?300. I have downloaded the Emerald software and can read back data from the ECU (and presumably change parameters). What i am asking is anyone on here been able to remap their ECU? If so any advice? Or alternatively can anyone recommend a reputable transport company on Merseyside?

Hi,
The Emerald K3 unit that you have fitted includes an idle control setting, here's the link to the manual http://www.emeraldm3d.com/media/softwar ... 20v057.pdf
Firstly download and save the existing map, then have a play with the parameters. As you are only adjusting the idle control it's unlikely you will do any harm. I don't advise changing any of the other parameters in the map.

Are you running an o2 senser? If you are you can set the targets within specs and it will self tune itself, to a point.
Alternatively call emerald and ask Leoni if Karl can email you a map to suit. You can keep your main running map and just over write the new info.
I find them very helpfull.

Before you start to fiddle with the mapping take a copy of the map to hard drive. At least then you can get back to how it was if it all goes pear shaped.
I would have thought you could have got it re-mapped locally.

You can swap your current mapping into a different folder on the ecu, you can have 3 maps on it dont forget, or even copy it too a different place, 2 copies of same map. Then you can play with your settings knowing if you mess it up you can always revert back to origonal one. The disc i got from leoni has maps on for loads of different engines, about 5 were zetecs in diferent sizes and configs,

The ECU we are talking about is 10 years old, it may not have map switching. I'm not sure when that came in?

Carburettors are such fun, loads of things to tweak and get wrong. I used to spend hours messing with main jets and pump jets, bleed screws, float levels. The temptation to fiddle was immense, now all I have to do is check the balance with one of those Weber airflow gizmos, takes 5 minutes, and providing you haven't changed anything on the engine nothing to reset or adjust because the ECU does that for you.
I do miss, messing around with carbs, when you did things logically and took notes it was very rewarding to get the engine running sweetly.
The only time I had to do some serious tweaking was to my Duratec to get it to run properly when warming up, the fun part being that you only really had one chance a day to alter the start and warmup fuelling map, so it was back to taking notes and only altering one thing at a time.

Yes mine is the M3DK ECU. The car was dulit in 2005/2006 by an ex Saab engineer and has an unusal dash and wiring set up. The car has run absolutlety fine for 10 years but the recent fitting of a stainless manifold and exhaust system has put the engine running out of order. This seems to be due to the wider bore of the manifold (not at my request!). I've downloaded the softawre and have managed to read back the current parameters but need to find time to have a fiddle with re-mapping it. The problem lies with the idle and low speed running. It will not idle (hovers around 500 rpm but lumpy and cuts out) and it is clearly running rich at low revs. At higher revs the car is absolutely fine. The ECU does control the rev counter and in the early days when i had the ECU under the drivers seat the rev counter would sometime stop working. All i had to do to sort this out was jiggle the plug. In the end i moved the ECU to under the dash and since them i have not had a problem.
Thanks for all you help with this problem. I have tried ringing Karl at Emerald but all i get is the answer machine. I'll try again this week as i am hoping to have a go at re-mapping on Thursday.
