After a chat with Dave about the difficulties of winching a car onto a recovery truck decided to get down and dirty before it gets too cold,so here goes...

A piece of stainless lying around...

and a length of 1/4 tool steel...

attacked with the welder...

a bit of a clean..

bolt it on

Hope I never have to use it...

The front being taken care of by a few feet of nylon rope round the plenum,held in place out of the way by a cable tie...one yank and it's down as my Grandmother used to say.

Looks nice. Can you say how/where it's bolted? I'm wondering about doing a similar thing, but coming up under the spare wheel bracket and bolting on there.

Bolted on the two unf bolts through the chassis into the boot ( battery earths).

I fitted a front tow loop to the chassis leg and a similar rear loop with an internal 1/4" mild steel plate to the rear bolts on the chassis

Should be enough to strap the car down I hope.

I appreciate the need for a towing eye, but is it wise to attach either a metal eye or a tow rope to the delicate steering rack platform?

I take your point but as you can see I've welded and gusseted the rack mounting legs and for strapping the car down on the trailer I'm sure it will suffice. You will also see I've only used a single mounting bolt to avoid straining the leg. I guess I could do a quick FEA to check it out but when you've done and said all its only a tie down.

..and as for the rope,when it's unravelled it's pulling on the plenum not so much the steering rack platform.

for strapping down to a trailer i use 4 webbing straps threaded through a hole in each wheel.

Have you cling-filmed it or has it been that long on the trailer that spiders have cocooned it....

hi John,
there was no Windscreen or back Window when i picked up the car and the Weather Forecast was rain.
I had 900 kms to drive back to France so i wrapped it using a big industrial roll of cling film.
I can recommend this it works very well. When i arrived back in Brittany the TVR 1600M was very clean after a shower for 900 kms

When working on the exhaust I decided to weld 2 loops of 6mm mild steel round bar, on the vertical rear of the chassis for the rear, and on the crossmember for the front as I did not want to touch the steering bar holder (took that opportunity to empty the vacuum tank of oilly fluids before welding) the front welds are apart by about 15cm to spread the load, and the bar are about 18cm long to decrease shearing effect on the vaccum tank - haven't use any of them so far... except the rear one that serves also as ground clearance warning (on some tracks with strong left turns and heavy passenger)
