Exhaust Pipe Protection

I have just seen the picture in Mods you have done - Hits winners, misses and loosers of bast0n's nicely made exhaust skid plate. Very smart but leads to my question as whether anyone has attempted putting the centre pipe inside the chassis. Could it be done?
Then again, looking at this pic maybe I have answered my own question........
Perhaps if I move the cobwebs........?
Alternatively has anyone sourced an oval pipe as shown in the cross section of the rear suspension in the workshop manual. I've never actually seen one but it would help in getting the pipe more out of the way.

Roy ,
I have some of the original oval pipe off a couple of S1's and I went the oval pipe route on the last build to get more ground clearance for a bigger bore exhaust .
As an aside I think heat is the reason you would not want to run the pipe through the center section of the frame .
