For Sale 1966 Elan Coupe. Pre Airflow.

Hi all, SALE PENDING TO LOTUSELAN.NET MEMBER, DEPOSIT TAKEN!!!!

My good friend Ron has just bought a car and decided that he wants me to sell his 1966 Elan Coupe.

Last fall I pulled the motor and sent it out to be freshened up. All we did was put in new rings, valves, guides. Replaced the water pump. I have the motor sitting with the bottom end together, the head together, just getting ready to reassemble it all.

Car has all new springs, shocks, suspension arms, bushings, adjustable rear spring perches, and a lot more that I have forgot.

Before I do this, I was wondering if anyone was interested in the car as is. You can assemble the motor, put it back in the car etc.etc. Will be cheaper. at 25K now.

Ron bought the car in 1966 right off the stand at the Earls Court Motor show. He is the original owner. Car is BRG, second paint job and it is showing its age. New dash a few years ago. Aussie CVs,. Everything works. Car is a very nice 60 year old car. Driven quite a bit over the years. Pictures available. Car is located in upstate NY. Car is near Watkins Glen, Motor is at my house in Buffalo.

Email if interested.

I never was good at math. So kill me for 11 years. I actually did it quickly in my head when I composed it and came up with 50. So I guess I am bad at math.

Will get you the VIN. I am not sure If Ron told me that he was walking by the stand to go buy a Jag and just bought the car from a guy on the stand, or it was the car on the stand. Maybe I got the whole story wrong. You know how we old guys are with reollecting stories. Next thing they will be telling me that I cannot broadcast the news any more. (wait...that is not me!)

Maybe Ron will chime in.

A LHD car would seem strange at the Earls Ct show. Was it converted from RHD?

No it was not converted. Like I said, he might have just bought it off the stand by talking to a sales guy. I might have misunderstood him.

In 64/65 I was stationed in Viet Nan & went to Australia on leave. Saw an Elite & fell in love. Returning to the States I went to England & to the Earls Court show. Lotus no longer were making Elite's but introduced the Elan Coupe at the show. So I ordered one, it was shipped on 26 Jan 1966 & I took delivery at the Port of New York late Feb 1966. I missed Diana Rigg by 2 days.

That wa Ron that just replied. Wow, wouldn't ot have been great to get a picture with Diana. About 10 years ago, maybe more , a friend who owned an Elan was a customs agent here in Buffalo. Diana Rigg was stopped at the bridge from Canada. She was going to the one of the a Redgraves place on Broadway in I think "The Graduate" as i recall, might be wrong,. They stopped her to make sure she was not taking a job an American could fill. No joke. My friend had the opportunity to talk with her for a while. She said that the Lotus Elan was just a prop to her. She was flattered by all the attention over the years, but it was not special at the time.

Hi Tony. Did you manage to get the VIN?

And john1180, Lotus did have LHD cars at some of the London Earls Court Motor Shows.

A quick search of woodcock's posts......

"To add to Bills last story about Yanks & number plates. I had a Coupe 5192 that I ordered at the Earls Court show in "65 exported to the US. It came with license JGF 129 D. I drove it around Washington DC for awhile. Making a quick left turn I was signaled over by a traffic cop. When he came over & noticed the plates, he muttered "dam diplomats"."
