Lotus Elan S4 1970 TENTATIVELY SOLD

PostPost by: crush » Thu Nov 13, 2014 2:17 am

CAR IS TENTATIVELY SOLD, to the first person who expressed interest in it. It is going to a new home in Seattle, I just hope it gets used!

Have owned this car since 1990. Complete engine, electrical (Mallory dual point ignition), suspension and drive train rebuild in 1994. Driven sparingly for ten years, then as it was not being used much, I put it in storage (in a heated garage) for the last ten years. I intended to take it out of storage but never got around to it. Now I am forced to move, probably into a condominium meaning I will have no room for it anymore. The car is complete, frame is good, it has knock-off wheels, 34,000 miles on the odometer. Does not leak oil. The dash is not original (see photos) but is wood. Momo steering wheel and shift knob, although I have the original steering wheel. Top is very good condition, as is the tonneau cover. Paint has minor blemishes/scratches. LHD. Car has not been started in 10 years so you know what to expect... for example, there is no battery. If you want any more info or specific photos, just email me.
$10,000USD, buyer responsible for shipping as necessary.
Car is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Salut

That seems very cheap, and I'd be more than interested if this can be confirmed as a genuine sale.

Sorry for the suspicion, crush, but there have been a lot of scams on this site.

Dear Vernon...to be quite honest I was not sure how much to ask for. I paid $15,500 in 1990 and spent ~$11,000 for the rebuild. Plus more here and there (for the new starter, electric radiator fan and a new water pump for instance). I put probably 5,000 miles on the car total over 24 years. Perhaps I am asking too little as I am definitely losing money. Maybe I should ask for more but I know the new owner will probably have a bit of a job to get it going again as it has literally been untouched for 10 years - although it is not a "rusty barn find". I want the car to go to a new home where it will be used. Just noticed you are from France - I thought with the "salut" greeting you might be local...anyone close to Montreal is obviously welcome to come and check it out.
Otherwise, what proof do you need me to provide?
Thanks,
Chris

PS: Dan, my emails to you bounced back yesterday...I tried to re-send, if you received please email me back and let me know.

I have had requests for current photos. I had not expected this much interest so quickly, so I had not actually gone and taken more current photos. The car was wedged in between lots of wine and 3 motorcylces, so I moved everything out and took some pictures. There was still air in the tires, the car rolled backwards NO problem, so brakes not frozen on.
Here is link for photos: http://s244.photobucket.com/user/crush5 ... 0ELAN%20S4
I am not trying to hide anything so you can see all the "warts" in the photos. Please note however that the body has no serious damage to it and the frame looks good.
I am dealing with "first come, first served", so if I have not replied to anyone it is because someone else who replied sooner appears seriously interested - so my apologies, I am not trying to be rude.
Thanks
Chris

Salut Chris

Apologies for questioning you. Your car looks to be a very honest Elan and as you have seen the price has interested a lot of people.

I can't really justify importing a car at the mo' (we're moving soon and there'll be some work to do on the new/old house) - otherwise I'd pursue this further; and if I was on the same continent I would have snapped it up already.

Make sure you sell it to someone who's going to use it and not sell it on for a profit!
