Car is now sold.
1973 Lotus elan +2s 130 ( was 5 speed, now 4 speed) , located in Liverpool.
Car is running, but not road worthy because of brakes ( servo ) + paint partly stripped so it looks unsightly.
The car is complete but in need of Cosmetic restoration. All mechanicals other than the servo are in good condition especially considering the low mileage ( 20K ) since the major overhaul by the previous owner in 1996.
Obviously the major aspect of the restoration would be the repainting of the replacement shell and interior trim restoration.
A selection of spares are included in the sale which you could sell to raise cash or store for future requirements, I estimate they have a market value of about ?1000.
Work undertaken by Previous Owner
Major rebuild in 1996 - mileage 88899 - total invoice cost ?8000 - Work Undertaken by the very highly regarded restorer Peter Day ( Daytune ) google him if you dont know his work.
- Replacement Lotus Galvanised Chassis
- New steering rack
- engine bay loom.
- New wishbones
- brake overhaul
- long list of new parts.
Engine rebuild 29/07/1996 - mileage 89455 - total cost ?3000 - Work Undertaken by Peter Day ( Daytune )
- Head skim
- rebore
- New pistons
- New bearings
- New waterpump
- new oil pump
- long list of new parts
MOT 31/7/1997 - Mileage 94390, ( 5k )
MOT 01/8/1998 - Mileage 99099, ( 5k )
MOT 30/8/1999 - Mileage 99099, ( Owner informs me Speedo stopped working which I confirmed when I
purchased the car in Jan 2000. Can only assume similar mileage of 5k )
I Purchased the car in Jan 2000.
Change speedo to one reading approx 50k, still have old speedo, reading ( 99099 )
MOT 25/08/2000 - Mileage 51231
MOT 02/10/2001 - Mileage 53587
Work undertaken during My ownership
- New front shocks
- New front Springs
- New rear shocks
- New door hinge pins machined.
- New Rear Outer wishbone bushes.
- Replaced broken 5 speed box with 4 speed box, including new clutch.
- New rotoflexes + bolts, (July 2000)
- Replacement rear hubs with new drive pegs.
- Stainless exhaust rearbox
- New exhaust centre pipe.
I can recall changing the oil at least three times in my ownership. Once straight after buying the car.
Once when the engine was out to change the gearbox (July 2001) and Finally just before the car was laid up in may 2002.
Servo Developed Problem so I took the car off road to repaint in may 2002. Started stripping paint but baby and house move meant the car has been stored ever since. Dry stored in my dads garage for 6 years and under a tarp for the last 2 years. Stored with Oil in the Bores and turned over by hand now and again.
Upon stripping the paint from the car it turned out a considerable amount of of accident damage has occured in the distant ( pre new chassis ) past. This had been repaired badly in my opinion with the use of lots of filler. This lead me to source a replacement shell which is in better shape although in need of stripping and painting.
Interior :- Needs retrim to front seats, new carpets, new dash. New door cards, new headlining.
Spares Included
- Lotus Elan 5 speed gearbox broken ( 3rd gear synchro hub broken )
- Lotus Elan 5 Speed Propshaft
- Lotus Elan 5 Speed Gearbox support bracket.
- 1979 Lotus ELite, Lotus 5 speed gearbox ( Condition unknown, although was told it was from a working car )
The Lotus 5 speed box was the original gearbox as fitted to the car when I purchased it. I was responsible
for breaking the Synchro hub and replaced the box whith a good 4 speed. I purchased an ELite 5 speed box with the intention of swapping the tailshaft and bellhousing to create a new 5 speed to fit the ELan. My plan was to build a working box using the best parts from the two. Overhaul Details are available in the workshop manual and a very good overview of additional improvements for the box can be found here :-

Some spares on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LOTUS-5-SPEED-ALL ... 33502db9fd
Synchro rings are available on ebay as are some of the bearings. Good Elite boxes come up often on Ebay for relatively little money. The conversion process is a matter of swapping the bellhousing and Tailshaft from the Elan box. Once the box is working the only additional parts required are a 5 speed mounting bush and 5 speed clutch. 5 speed boxes fetch good money and I would expect a kit form one such as this to fetch at least ?300 if you did not decide to refurb and refit it yourself. Here's some examples from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT
The following spares have either been bought by me or taken from the spares car I acquired and broke, they are not removed from the car which is complete but in need of comsmetic restoration.
1972 Body shell + vin plate + v5 ( tax exempt ) . Not currently fitted to the car an will require trailering, The majority of the replacement shell is still in its original paint which can be rubbed back to gel coat relatively quickly using only wet and dry. This shell has had a replacment front section which is more heavily painted hence the reason for the purchase of two tubs (~?75) of the fibreglass safe paint stripper RemovAll 620. These are included in the sale.
This stripper was developed for boats and will not attack the gel coat according to the manufacturer, see their website here :-

This product was also reviewed by Practical classics somt time ago, see here :-

rust.

they were usually discared because they were so heavy)
- 2 rear springs, Bought new by myself but never fitted.
- Pedal box
- Large amount of Leather cloth fabric which matches the interior trim.
- New and unused chassis mounting Padding
- 2 Adjustable Koni rear strut inserts, used but rebuildable, probably working fine but replaced

A couple of people have asked why I'm selling so to save further questions I'll put it here.
Basically the car and my back do not go together. This car has caused me no end of back pain, every job involves bending at ridiculous angles. My back had been fine for years until This summer when I foolishly started work on the car again, now I'm booked in with specialist probably looking at surgery.
Please get this destroyer of spines out of my life so I can stop wasting time fantasising about completing it.
Barry ( in pain ).

Apologies, I checked the identity of the supposed '72 shell last night and its actually a '74. No idea how I made this mistake. Genuinely not intended to mislead.
Somebody has pointed out however that there is a chance that my '73 car may be exempt since it was registered in Feb 1973 and hence may actually be built in 72.
Does anybody know how I confirm when a car was built not registered?
Thanks
Barry.

The first 4 digits of the chassis number, on the vin plate, give the year and month of build (YYMM).

Barry,
Sorry to see you intending to sell your car because of a back problem. I had a back operation in 2001 and have not looked back since at 60 next birthday I feel good enough to go back to my original trade of being a mechanic instead of my current PM job.
Good luck with the car and the back
