Plus 2S 130/5 Offered for sale

PostPost by: clivetonge » Tue Feb 28, 2023 2:38 pm

Reluctant sale of my 1972 Plus2S 130/5. Mine since 2016 bought, following long term previous ownership, via Paul Matty as a “recommissioning “ project. Came with a massive file of invoices, and MOTs from 1979.

Highlights include a head and short engine rebuild both by QED many years but probably only about 6000 miles ago. New Dellortos around that time. Chassis has been replaced (Lotus galvanized) but no record or receipt. Currently old English white, originally regency red. Showing 45,000 miles, certainly done 145,000.

Since purchase I have fitted new:
• Sill members (Spydersports) and seatbelts
• Wishbones and bushes all round
• Servo
• Clutch slave cylinder
• Wheel spinners & tyres
• Pedal box/door hinge/various lenses/lights
• Voights T9 gearbox plus clutch
• Starter motor
• Alternator

Other sundry parts (listed in history) and fluids all round

We have used her for touring the UK, plus Ireland. She refused to overheat in summer despite massive delays on the M6. Comfortably cruises at 70 mph. Useable with scope for fettling and improvement

Good points: mechanically good, TTR CV drive shafts, brand new gearbox and clutch. loads of new parts, strong engine with Aldon ignitor, toothed auxillary drive belt. Good chassis with new sill members. Reasonable chrome. Spax coilovers at front, correct anti droop dampers at rear.

Poor/bad points: Paint work needs attention. Many and various scrapes and cracks. Oil leak from nearside rear of timing cover (I live with it). Windscreen surround discoloured. Interior very average with Motorola steering wheel, no ambient temperature gauge and clock not working.

Currently fitted with MX5 seats, but original mounts uncompromised and will come with original seats.

Also a high mileage, running when removed, 1800 Zetec (ex Ford Focus) included if required. Otherwise free to anyone who wants it! Thereby hangs a tale……..

Any spares I have will be included.

The car owes me circa £18000 but a hassle free sale to a good home is important too, so offers/discussions welcome.

Reason for sale? Virtually zero miles last year and retirement means loss of business premises and so storage becomes an issue in April. I have been a Lotus owner and enthusiast for 40 years and will be keeping my S3 DHC forever. Inspection welcome in Warwickshire. Can delivery locally or further afield for fuel costs. Thanks for your interest. Very tempted but I need to make space, I am selling esprit gt3 first before I come back to an elan… so timing sucks.
I think I know this car, I recall it came out of long term storage with grease over the chrome work, so it was stored with long term in mind !

Hi Clive, as a lifelong Lotus enthusiast I'm very interested in your car. I started with my first Lotus, a Series 2 Seven, in 1972 and this was followed by a Series 3 Elan. Unfortunately that had to be sold to fund the purchase of a house when I was married but many Lotus's have followed - more Elans, +2s of various flavours, a couple more Sevens, Several Europas, Eclats and an Elite, - also M100s. Now retired I'm itching to own another classic Lotus and yours, being mechanically good, sounds just the ticket. Something to use and gradually improve would fill the long boring days of retirement and also remind me of the glory days of my youth. I've tried more modern Lotus's such as the Elise and brilliant as they are , once in I have great difficulty getting out again - oh to be young again! Anyway, please forgive my rambling. What I wanted to ask you what would be your very best price for a quick and hassle free cash sale to a fellow Lotus enthusiast? Best regards, Dave
