I purchased my 1973 +2 130/5 in 2014 from my brother as a recommissioning project. He had owned the car since 1992 and only covered about 1000 miles. Since 1992 the car has always been stored in a dry garage and never been used in the rain. Since finishing the car in April this year I have covered about 250 miles.
Since I have owned the car I have completed the following work:
BODY:
The car still retained its original chassis which had beed repaired in the front turrets but was cracked in several places. I obtained an LR chassis from a forum member which had been painted with hammerite from new, and therefore in good condition. I cleaned the chassis of any loose paint and then gave it one coat of 'Aquasteel' one coat of red primer and two coats of smooth hammerite. The chassis is totally rust free. The vacuum solenoid has been replaced so the headlights stay down for weeks.
New Spyder galvanised sill members.
The bodyshell was in excellent condition with no crazing or cracking. The paint from a 1980's respray was stable so I gave it a light sanding then cellulose primer and top coat in Gentian blue. The roof is silver glitter, fitted with a Tudor Webasto sliding roof in blue vinyl.
The windscreen is a new laminated Sundym top tint from Sue Miller.
The boot has been carpeted in black with a hard cover over the floor.
New door locks.
ENGINE:
The engine is a 1700 tall block with Kent L14 cams, gas flowed head with 1.625 inlets and 1.375 exhaust valves. Cosworth valve springs. Aldon ignitor ignition with Flamethrower coil. Solid copper leads & NGK plugs.
Carburettors have been stripped & cleaned. Fitted with new pump diaphragms & side squirt pump jets. Facet fuel pump in line to prime carbs if empty float chambers, operated by a discreet switch.
New engine mounts.
Oil pressure is 40+lbs hot running. 30lbs+ idle.
TRANSMISSION :
Lotus 5 speed gearbox. No jumping out of gear or graunching changes. New gearbox mount. All new differential mounts. Fitted with Heavy Duty 'Competition' Rotoflex couplings.
SUSPENSION :
All wishbones cleaned & painted with smooth hammerite. ALL suspension bushes replaced with new OE items. Front shock absorbers are new ProTec adjustable platform & rebound. Anti roll bar & droplink bushes new OE. Steering mounts new. Trunnion bushes new. Steering column bushes new.
BRAKES :
All discs are free from scoring or lipping. Front calipers fitted with new pistons & seals. Master cylinder rebuilt with new seals & pedal box strengthening plate fitted from interior.
Servo rebuilt with new seals. All flexible lines replaced with braided stainless including clutch.
INTERIOR :
Original interior retained in excellent condition apart from slight cracking on the drivers seat. Carpets not original. Dashboard is original with age related 'Patina' (surface cracks)
All instruments are original and working (even the clock and ambient temperature gauge)
New interior lights.
Original Phillips Turnolock radio present & working with original retractable ariel.
