Lotus Elan

Trimmer Recommendation

PostPost by: RichardHawkins » Tue Nov 26, 2024 10:28 pm

Gentlemen,

I am looking for someone to trim my S4 Fixed Head Elan. I live in the north east corner of Lincolnshire about 10miles south of Grimsby. I realise that I will have to travel, but would like to find someone within 100 miles of my home so that I can visit the work in progress without needing an overnight stay. 100 miles there and then back is about the limit of my ability these days.

I thought I had found someone (Inspire Automotive) south west of Boston but he has declined the work. This brings me to the other problem, I am a ‘fussy bugger’ and I see no point in hiding this characteristic, I seem to have the ability to frighten people into not working for me. Some of my friends are trying to persuade me to do the work myself, but I think I am too old to learn another skill and do not get on at all well with adhesives. I have managed to source and buy loop pile carpet, but do not have enough to make a mistake and do again as I learn.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a fussy old man?

Whilst I can recommend a splendid chap, he is near me in north east Essex, so I am afraid well outside your 100 mile radius, Richard.

Hi. Richard. Have you tried Don Barr across the river in Hull? This trimming shop has been on the go for years. Not had any personal experience myself other than buying trimming products from them.

Hi Richard,
Sorry I can't help with a trimmer close to you ..
However noticed you mention you had managed to source some correct loop pile carpet? I would really appreciate hearing where you sourced this from please?

Alan.

Alan,

I purchased some loop pile carpet from Newton Commercials in Suffolk. When I told another Lotus owner he was told by Newton that they had no more stock. I bought more Black loop pile, for the boot and door cards from a trim company in Melbourne Australia. The carpet was reasonably priced but transport nearly broke the deal as the quantity was too much to post and couriers were prohibitive, but by sending the carpet as two parcel Australia Post was able to send it to me. I can’t remember the company name but will look it up if you are still interested.

Bill,

I have not heard good reports of Don Barr, do you have any experience?

Hi Richard
No I don’t have any recent experience. The last time I used them for a trimming job was back in the 80’s. They’re still in existence so must be doing something right.
They’re not far away from you so worth paying a visit.

Yes Richard, Now I think I remember. We had this conversation about Newton Trimming once before.
When I called Newton they refused to supply me and in fact were downright rude in doing so. Why the attitude I do not know! They said they imported it especially for Ford Escort moulded carpets and nothing else. A horrible company who I would not want to do business with!

If you could send me info about the company in Australia it would be good and I can then make an equiry. Your comment about the transport cost duly noted!....... Either post the info on here or PM, whichever is convenient.

Thank you,

Alan.

Not sure about the 100miles, but Option 1 are good. The web site does not mention the fact they have a trim shop.

I made an enquiry at Option 1 earlier this year and Frank told me he had closed the trim shop.

I’m planning to use Allon Whites.

Sorry Richard not much good for you up in Grimsby

Alan,

The company I bought from in Australia was All Car Carpets in Melbourne.

Hope this helps,

The Den Automotive have an excellent trim service and it's about 100 miles from you.
The usual Lotus trimmers are Allon White, a bit further away

Graeme,

Thanks for the suggestion, do you have any experience of their work?
