Timing question

This is a really simple question but I have not been able to find it through a search. More embarrassing is I can’t seem to sort it out in my mind.
When rotating the distributor clockwise does this advance or retard the timing?
Thanks,
Steve

Retard is always the direction of rotation, in this case it is anti clockwise to retard.
That's the rotation of the distributor cam not the crank.
