1970 Vegantune S4 FHC Restoration

PostPost by: MalcM » Wed Aug 11, 2021 11:08 am

Finally making a bit of headway on things now so thought I would start a bit of a ongoing thread for updates.

The car is a 1970 Elan S4 which my father has owned for roughly 30 years, most of the last 20 it’s been parked up in his garage.

It had a power of work done to it at Vegantune in October of 1982 (~£14k!) which included the body modifications, fitting the Spyder cage, the Compomotove rims, fitting sunroof etc.

I had initially planned to use it for my wedding car back in 2018, but came to realise this wasn’t realistic. It deserved a proper recommissioning, not a bodge to get it back on the road for the sake of 1 day.

So it moved to my garage... and I achieved basically nothing. Fair play to the blokes doing full restorations in single garages or driveways. I just can’t work when I don’t feel like I’ve got proper space around me. Recently I’ve managed to get access to a workshop though and got things moving.

Couple of weeks ago I managed (with the help of the checklist found on this forum) to separate the body and chassis.

Now the real fun begins! Engine and gearbox rebuild, full body respray, few million other tasks. First few posts in this might be a bit scattered chronologically but then I’ll try and keep it a bit more real time.

Also made a video of the body-chassis split, subtitles available on request
