My S3 early history?

PostPost by: David1953 » Tue Nov 10, 2020 8:52 pm

I have recently rebuilt the S3 FHC I bought in 1979, and it would be great if anyone knows anything of its history before then.
Registration RBL 296F supplied by the factory as a kit to Mike Spence in Jan 1968. Registered May 1968.
When rebuilding I found it had the front section replaced, and a large number of resprays. So clearly an interesting life, maybe raced? The only name on the log book was John Stuart Coe.
It was Red over White when I got it.

The 'BL indicates that it was 1st registered in Berkshire:
"BL Berkshire (1903–74)"

Looks like yours is just a few months earlier.
Mike Spence was in Maidenhead at the time so I guess they registered it for the first customer.

Yes mine was sold on September 18th 1967
I was 7 years old at the time :D

You've owned yours longer than I have though. I bought mine in 1983!

Like yours, mine has had a checkered history I believe. It had many racing mods when I bought it and according to Graham Arnold, an engine swap at some point previous to my ownership

It is now though somewhere close to stock after a continuous rolling renovation over 37 years.
