Elan + 2 steering rack rebuild question (seals)

PostPost by: Tomnewell » Sun Jun 04, 2017 10:25 pm

Hi there,

I am looking to rebuild my plus 2 steering rack. The rack itself is in good condition but it is leaking grease/fluid out of three ends. I can see in the manual and on parts sites that there is an 'O' ring on the pinion end. I will replace this and this will cork one leak.

However, on dismantling the rack, there seams to be no seal on the tie rod ends. Am I missing something? Should there be a seal to stop fluid leaking into the rack gaitors? I know the tie rods need grease but surely not this much!

Thanks in advance.

Tom.

The rack bellows gaiters are the seals at the end of the rack to the tie rods there are no other seals. They need to be clamped to both the rack end and the tie rod to seal correctly.

Oh ok that's interesting, I'll be sure to secure it properly when I rebuild it.

Thanks for your help Rohan.
