Recovered from the wedding!

Yes Tim,it does seem a little strange for a supplying dealer to be in Leighton Buzzard, and the car registered in Kent.Perhaps originally supplied to Camden, then moved on by them to Tonbridge Road garage? Or being supplied as a kit?
It is frustrating to know so little about the cars first four years!

All is looking great, very smart new headlining replacing the Gauloise stained original, and newly made rear quarter panels.
Engine is almost ready to go in,fuel pump removed and blanked off, waiting for cam coverto come back from powder coating.
For the first time in my knowledge of the car, it will have a full air filter assembly, which, together with the new ss exhaust, will probably change the sound of the car greatly.
Miles is expecting to be finished and Mot'd by the end of the month, then it's off to the body shop for a tidy up whilst I'm waiting for the registration to get sorted.
I wish I had the funds, and the time, to get a full body restoration by Miles, but both are now in short supply! I must say I'm very pleased and impressed with the work being done, and very thankful that I have this wonderful source of knowledge and expertise (not to mention source of parts)virtually on my doorstep.

Car is coming on nicely!
I happened to be at FGS a couple of weeks ago and noticed your car.
Isn't the wing a "feature"?

Be great to get the car back on the road.

Are you doing just your Elan at the wedding or a whole convoy?

A quick visit today, engine still not in yet, promised to be done today, but I'm a little doubtful as Miles has so much on in progress,Tournesols' beautiful white +2,in for some work and a red +2 that seems to be the cause of much cursing from Miles.......
I now have an air filter assembly for the first time ever,a modern canister type oil filter, and some rather garish bright blue ht leads.
I'm quite happy with the interior now, headlining has made a great improvement, and the seats and dash were fine already.
Maybe two weeks more, then in for Mot at Miles tame mot tester.Hopefully no longer as the body shop I'm using has me booked in for the start of June.
As soon as I get the mot I can start on the registration process..........

Hope you get all done in time for the big day! When is it?

I think you are being a bit harsh on your car Tournesol. It does look good, has a great interior and I'm sure your "relationship" will be better when you get it back. You will of course be substantially poorer, but that's just a fact of life with these great cars.
The wedding plans sound really great, from my daughters original idea of an intimate church wedding followed by "a piss-up in a field",things have of course escalated, and costs too! Transportation for the bride is ?lan to the church, and for Bride and Groom in the ?lan from church to reception field, accompanied by a Vw bus or two to carry bridesmaids and best man, ushers etc.
As an aside,as a father I couldn't hope for a better future son in law.He has a great respectful loving relationship with my daughter, and owns a brewery! What more could a father want?
It should be very interesting seeing how a nearly 6ft bride in full wedding dress manages to get in and out of a fhc,but I think it will all just add to the fun of the day!

It passed!!
I had a call from Miles this evening to say that I now have a MOT certificate,so will be able to collect the car and start the registration process.
He hasn't worked out the bill yet, didn't want to spoil my weekend.
Hopefully I shall be able to collect it sometime next week, and start tidying up the bodywork, with any luck that will be done by the time the paperwork is sorted.

It's the big day today! Collection day and pretty much on schedule. Next stage is to get some opinions from my friendly local body shop. He specialises in VWs,mainly campers, but has also done a fantastic job on a few Novas (a very futuristic vw based kit car)
It should be quite an experience today, first time on the road after all these years, running in of course, but still looking forward to it!
Miles has managed to put about 30 miles on roadtesting, and was positively enthusiastic about how great it feels on the road, but then he is slightly biased!

Home safely,a ten mile drive to make me remember what it's all been for!
Under very strict orders to keep below 3000revs,but quite amazed at how easy it is to keep up with modern traffic. I suppose the other most striking thing is just the sheer size of it next to modern cars, but also that it doesn't feel cramped inside.
I'm onto club lotus for authentication, and then dvla.
It's very difficult to resist the temptation, but I really have to get the registration sorted before using and getting it run in.

Great news and thanks for keeping us abreast of developments.

I've been impressed by the speed with which Miles has done the work.

Now, photos would be appreciated!

I shall get some photos of the engine and chassis work up as soon as I can. I too was impressed with the speed and standard of the work,SWMBO a little less so with the bill.........
My local bodyshop was a little shocked by the bodywork,I explained that the last paint job was in about 77, and that it did look ok for a decade or two,but the paint was pretty bad from the factory anyway. He was however somewhat overcome by emotion when he peered underneath, describing it as "chassis porn", which I took to be a compliment!
I'm booked in for mid June, with me stripping as much as possible off the car,and he will remove the paint and make good the surface and spray.
I have seen his work on other cars and am pretty impressed,so will just have to wait and see how it turns out. I really cannot afford c?12k for a body job by the usual suspects, and am sure that my resulting finish will still be much better than the original!

Rohan
I think it was finding the Spax adjusting knob in the glovebox that finished him off!
