S1 Elans - How Many Left

PostPost by: AlfaLofa » Thu Jun 12, 2014 9:38 am

I've had a look at the "How Many Left" website with reference to S1 Elans - and it appears that there are a maximum of:

21 licenced S1s on the road (6 +15 from the 2 tables)
and
8 S1s under SORN (3 + 5)

2 tables are referenced because some S1s are listed simply (and I suppose correctly) as "Elans" whereas others are registered as S1s.

These figures are maximum because not all 1964 Elans were S1s.

However there are naturally extra unlisted UK S1s including those neither licenced nor on SORN - including the racers.

But if you have a UK licenced S1 you have a very rare car and are one of a very rare breed :D

I'm certain that they are very rare Elans, but of course, not a single one was registered as an S1 from new! Some could have been registered as Elan 1600.

As the S1 was only 1/10th of the total 2 seater Elan production (900 out of 9000) then they must be the most rare. As the oldest it seems reasonable that even proportionally there would be less left than any other model..

But that could still represent 400 or 500 or so cars worldwide?

As 75% or so of Lotus Elites have been accounted for in the Club Elite register, it seems a reasonable conservative estimate to say that at least 50% of the S1 cars are still alive...or awaiting resuscitation!

I know that over 50% of all the Sprints made still exist.

The How Many Left site is a very blunt instrument!

Tim I think there's over 200% of the original sprints now on the road...

I had a 1965 S1 or more exactly S1.5 does that count?
Then again, how many of those early Elans are still or returned to stock?

Hi Gang

My 26/0538, an Elan 1600 (pre S1) went on the on the production line Dec.20 1963. It is still all origional except paint, tires, battery and Japanese starter.

I purchased it direct from the factory (still have my origional invoice) as there were yet no dealers in Canada and had it shipped to Vancouver - all sight unseen and based on media reports extolling the car, of course, Jim Clark drove one so I figured if my hero could so shall I.

Hello Bill. I live in Ottawa, Canada and own two early Elans, 26/3840 which is S1.5, running, and 26/0469, under restoration following a bad accident by the previous owner. I was happy to read about a fellow Canadian (although 3,000 miles away) owning an early S1 as well. Cheers!
