Sold my Elan

PostPost by: lindbrosracing » Thu Feb 06, 2014 6:40 pm

Lotus Fans

I sold my 1973 Lotus Elan Sprint Coupe for I think a world record at the Gooding Sale in
Scottsdale this past January. $80,000 hammer price $88,000 total.
After having the car in our "family" for 41 years it was a stressful weekend but the people at Gooding
and so many Lotus Fans from the various clubs got the word out which generated a flurry of bidding.

?49,000 in round UK figures. Not sure that's an ?lan record but it's pretty close to tops for a Sprint.

Topping out the market?

Do you have any pictures of the car you could post here? They appear to be more valued in the UK than the US. I have seen several for sale in UK around 39K UKP however in the US around $40K USD seems to be the upper limit.

Thanks

Elan prices in the UK have been ahead of US prices for many years. The prices fetched at the Gooding and other recent US auctions have appeared to indicate that the classic car price bubble may be about to burst.

Tim,

I reckon it burst about a year ago - There have been some 'Bargains' on ebay and some good cars have gone for less than I would have thought.

But there seems to be some new big money at the top end and really good cars seem to go on up. Top end buyers buy from top end places, so us mere mortals can only watch from our plateau!

If there's general interest I have all Pat's pictures from his eBay auction...

p.s. There's been no decrease in classic car prices at all, they continue to rise.

Count me in for viewing the car pics. I'd like to see 'from the factory'.
Thanks Phil,

Very nice! Thanks Phil! I see the trunk/boot gasket's seam is at the top; would not have expected that. I wonder why the positive battery cable is blue and I wonder why the owner's handbook is not a Sprint one.

I guess no matter how well one stores a car, the exhaust is sure to deteriorate

For what its worth Greg my owners handbook is exactly the same (Elan S4) my Sprint is a Aug 71 registered and has a one sheet supplement for the Sprint. Interesting other little changes between UK an USA vehicles.
