AN Hardware

PostPost by: Csquared » Sat Dec 07, 2013 3:47 pm

Hello everyone, has any one compiled a complete list of AN/NAS/Mil spec hardware for Elan's? If so I would love a copy of it. or if any one has partial lists please post them up.

Thanks in advance

Google Bicknells race products ...PDF the on line catalogue and click on fittings ....I used dash. 3 fittings for my car and all the brake lines and plumbing ...cost about 300 dollars for the car ......ed. As an aside it's an interesting insight to "the other " form of racing

Let me redefine as my first post lacked clarity.

I am specifically looking for every nut and bolt list for the whole complete car
Either in conventional fractional measurements or already in AN measurements
If some one has any part of the list in any form I would love a copy.

to be even more direct
looking for all fasteners. Any place there is a nut and a bolt used, my intent is to replace it with a corresponding AN set of hardware.
Yes I am aware this will not be cheap and I am not concerned with that aspect of it.
all suspension hardware, all brake system hardware, etc etc

Thanks for that link twincamman looks like they have quite the selection of parts available and I am sure that there are bits that can be used in the Lotus world

Do you have the chart from the workshop manual? I just changed computers and don't have access yet to post it. It gives you the breakdown of the Lotus P/N into what it really is.
For example, P/N: HUCB0408
H = Hex head
UC = Course thread
B = Bolt
04 = Dia in 1/16"
08 = Length in 1/16" (very similar the the size call out method used in the AN and NAS specs)
...or 1/4-20 x 1/2 Hex Bolt

The chart works for all but the purpose built Lotus hardware. Like I said, I have it in a spreadsheet but I can't get to it today. I'm sure someone else can post or has in the past posted something similar. Dave Bean Engineering has a link at the bottom of their home page for their Bon Aero division. They sell Mil Spec hardware. There are links to charts for the AN and NAS specs. (the usual, no link to the company, just a satisfied customer).

Colin,

I believe what you are asking for is a "bolt map". I don't know if anyone has built one, but it could be built up from the parts manual as described above. The illustrations show where the fasteners go.

I agree with you about AN hardware. Most all of the common commercial fasteners are from third world countries. The mills and fabrication shops in China and India could care less what the marks mean....

If you are rebuilding an Elan the book "Prepare to Win" by Carroll Smith is a great resource in addition to the manual.

If you replace all the existing nuts and bolts with cap head bolts they are all grade 8 ......add Nylon nuts and good washers you have the same grade as AN

Dan,
Yes a bolt map is what I am seeking. I can get good quality hardware from Wurth thru my business, however I am in the process of doing an essentially no cost spared Elan sprint resto. So if the possibility of using the best of any given thing hardware, electrical etc is a possibility, then that is the way it will go. I have copies of the Carol Smith books.

Bud,
I actually contacted bean/bon aero and I am not sure if I got a sleeping customer service agent, but my experience with procuring AN spec hardware for the car was lets just say 180 degrees from yours. I basically requested that they come up with the list send me the stuff, open checkbook so to say. I got about 30% of what the car needs. None the less I would be more than willing to give it a second try if you had a sales/customer service person you have dealt with there that you think may be up to the task.

Twincamman,
I understand that under almost all scenarios the grade 8 will work with plenty of cushion for safety on a Lotus. I however will take the option of the best as I have noted before. I also like the quality control the AN/NAS/Mil spec offers.

Colin, I've really only picked up a couple of bolts from Bon Aero. Most of my customer satisfaction has come from dealing with Ken at Dave Bean.

I'm not sure you'll get anyone to do all the research and part conversion for the fasteners for one car, open checkbook or not. There's also Aircraft Spruce for aircraft grade fasteners if you've soured on DB.

So ....like....is this thing going to outer space?.... :lol: ...or just some fun track work ..You may find the bolt diameters

used by NASA and diameters used in the auto industry do not interchange ..I did ..I used an only for plumbing ed

Colin,

I don't know if you have experienced this, but the grip diameter of AN fasteners is slightly larger than SAE UNF fasteners. The holes in some parts you assemble may need reaming.

Bolting is not that simple as "give me all AN thanks" as I am sure you are aware - strength, toughness, diameter, head type and size, thread, overall and grip length are all important criteria and a AN bolt may or may not be the best option even if cost is no problem. For example I would not use AN for my conrod bolts and I don't believe it is meaningful to use AN for the chassis bolts into aluminium bobbins even if you can get a UNC AN bolt of the right size and with the right corrosion resistant plating.

cheers

Thanks everyone for the input. I am aware of slight size differences etc between conventional hardware vs AN. I have refitted 3 lotus formula fords with a full complement of AN unless spec'd for a specialized bolt. No desire to enter into the debate aspect of the forums just looking for the info. I will most likely spend the time to convert from the factory bolt list and go from there.

Thanks again for the input guys

Colin

Just so that you have as much data in front of you when you draw up your list, there is a full listing of nuts, bolts and fittings, with sizes, in Section X of Brian Buckland's book.
