Sweden with a car dealer cert that could do a VIN check

I'm trying to find some info about an old car and only have a VIN number. I don't have a V5 or reg Number. Car was ran in the UK for a while before it went to Sweden and raced/rallied. I guess it wasn't important that the documentation and Reg number stayed with the car.
They will supply the info to a car dealer. Is there any one in the UK that can do a HPI check for me?
Later Note: UK was a bust. Car was used in Sweden

Can't help with the HPi - hopefully someone will be along in a minute.
However - just so you don't get your hopes up. IF this is relating to an older car the DVLA (where the records are held) only went computerised in around 1983 so it is highly unlikely they will be able to find out anything. Sorry to be a Job's comforter.

Salut
I've read on here that the DVLA photocopy anything they have on your car including old non-computerised docs - for a small fee, of course.
However the car must be registered in the UK in your name.
Don't know what an HPI check is.

Vernon,
you are right to some extent. IF the car didn't have a record in 1983 then there wasn't anything to transfer to computer and microfiche so in this instance it is highly unlikely they will have anything to trace. i also believe searching by VIN on older cars is a problem.
Yes they do a service where they send you the old records for ?5 using form V888 but as you rightly say you have to be the owner on the current V5 and if you live abroad you have virtually no chance due to our wonderful Data Protection Act

Yes, the DVLA will provide what information they have, as explained here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/data/relinfo/howtorequest.aspx and here: http://fbhvc.co.uk/faqs-vehicle-registration/
But the detailed information they have may not go back far enough.

James,
The DVLA is a large bureaucratic government body that lost control of its records, and had to park loads of them and start again. Based in Wales and staffed by people with little interest in old cars.
There are a few other ways of finding out more, but very difficult without a reg. no.

They would have been surrendered when the car was exported - You send the V5 back to state that you have exported it and are not liable for tax.

If it was built for export and never registered in the UK, would it still have had a V5?
