Elan returning to the street after 40yrs...

PostPost by: TurbineHeli » Sat Dec 15, 2012 8:26 pm

As some of you will readily conclude, this car is a blend of several acquisitions, wrecks and near misses dating back to the late '60s.
To me, its pedigree is pristine and beyond reproach. Others may disagree but mothers always love their children, right?
Anyway, I prepared the sum of all the useful bits and pieces for SCCA fun back in 1972 but as so often happens, I got distracted with other more important activities and so am now just able to refocus energy on my Elan. It's part S1, part S2 and part 21st century.
I was reviewing some old records and ran across a few that may be interesting or amusing to this group so I'll scanned and included them here. The engine prep work I did back then is probably quite tame by todays' standards. For certain, I could not duplicate the work today for the cost incurred back then. I'll add more to this thread as I progress.

Here's the dyno report. I'll have to do something about the 13.1 to 1CR :(

1972 dollars, can't imagine what this would cost today...
Could you still find a Detroit Locker today and at what cost?

I called the 800# just now and Locan has morphed into Pilkington Glass and located in Ohio.
They have no record of a HT166 part number.
They do have part number HT264 for an early Elan, clear glass and current price of $251.

Question...Is there a physical difference in windscreen frame between S1,S2, and perhaps S3?

Angier,

All the data sheets are interesting but what I'd really like to see is the actual car. I have 26/4910 so not too far from yours and the Pilkington S1-S2 glass is a perfect fit. Good Luck!

I guess that info is now 9 1/2 years old and as you found out, Locan is no longer in Woburn. The key person is still Richard Tankel and he is a glass guy. Google of his name gives

http://www.google.com/search?q=Richard+ ... =firefox-a

and looking down the first page I see a company called
Prosource Glass Intl

I do not see the Elan glass listed but ask and find out, I may be needing a S1 (NOT S2, S3 or S4) windscreen. The S2 in the description is referring to the Coupe as it was introduced during the period when the S2 was being built. If you order for a S2 you will get a screen that you will sell to someone with a type 36 or type 45. That is what I did 35 years ago and it probably saved my life. My Elan was off the road for a long time and took almost every part being replaced to bring it back.

Remember "Elan S1 Glass" are the only words you want to use when talking to a glass guy about a screen.

I need a S1 windshield as well. Please let us know how you come out and I'll be adding the 'volume purchase' incentive!

The info I have for the body of 26/4841 is body # 4468

3054 would have been an early Lotus molded body. Lotus started at 3000 when it took back the molds from Bourne. My guess is that body shell was molded sometime between January and March of 1964.

What tail lamps does your Elan have?

Correct, the rear end of 26/4841 was consumed by fire and I bought the remains in '70.
I bought the car with #3054 body for $500 a year later as a complete running car.
I bought the car for the body and drivetrain! The chassis was very badly rusted out and eventually scrapped but I drove it for 2yrs and 4000 miles before complete disassembly in preparation for SCCA fun. The 26/4841 chassis tail was removed and chassis tail from 3054 body car was grafted on and presto....26/4841 with new body 3054 became a whole car again. :D

Todays' search produced the following data:

Dave Bean says S1 and S2 frames are identical and take the same windscreen whose centerline vertical dimension is 18 1/8". This dimension matches my old glass from body #3054. Their part number is
026B 0029, clear glass and cost $395 plus shipping. By the way, they don't stock this glass. They order it from some east coast location and have it drop shipped to you.

So what accounts for the fact that some frames have one attach point on either side while others have two?

Prosource in Massachusetts has an S1 clear glass available for $495 and it measures 18 1/8".

Pilkington Classics in Ohio what they call an S2 glass which measures 18 1/4" vertically.

My last message contained inaccurate information.
Prosource has an S2 glass, it does not measure 18 1/8" and does not have the rounded lower corners.
Sorry about that.
Looks like Dave Bean in California is the only US source. Now if we could just get ahold of their rolodex to see who they call for drop shipment....

The following was posted in
windshield availability
elan-f14/windshield-availability-t19781.html
Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:08 pm by me

"ALL roadsters use the same windscreen, there is only one. If Matty has an issue its because the manufacture has changed the product. The S1, S2 and Coupe Master parts book lists the same screen part number for both S1 and S2 Roadster there is another for the then NEW (1966) S2 Coupe that was used until the Sprint went out of production.

Part numbers for the S1 and S2 roadster and the S2 Coupe from the parts manual are as follows
Illustration Part Number Decription - Height - Width
BA133 ---- 26B 029 --- Windscreen - 18.125 - 45.5 -- bottom corners are rounded - ROADSTER
BB140 ---- 36B 029 --- Windscreen - 19.000 - 46.25 - bottom corners are pointed - COUPE

The measurements were taken from oem factory windscreens as I write this, this is the overall length and height of the screen itself out of the screen frame just as a glass supplier would measure it."
------------------------------------

Screen frame mounting discussed before in this topic, not sure what else to add. Seems like early was one 1/4 unc bolt per side and sometime during the S2 production Lotus became extravagant and installed 2 per side.

I don't remember who in New England I bought my S3 screen from but I knew from them that it was to be supplied by Pilkington, since they had quoted to me a little used name of a suburb of Columbus. In less than an hour, I drove to Pilkington's huge warehouse and drove away with my new screen. Pilkington owns all the Triplex molds and data and are the only source for new Brit screens. I questioned them about FHC rear screens, but they must not have been Triplex.

Miles Wilkins of Fibreglass services has some in stock, I know they fit because I bought one :D
They were made by Triplex in the UK
