Greetings,
Well the Elan made it to the Field meet here in Portland and ....cross my fingers did so with out any real big issues. That said I do have a question or two for the experts. Under moderate to heavy right hand turns I am getting some pretty loud and noticable rear drive line rubbing sounds. Nothing on left hand turns. As I do not have a lift I have yet to fully investigate but everything appears to be tight and rotoflexes appaer to be sound. What is the obvious thing that I am failing to see???
Having not been on the road since 1989 every mile that I ad seems to be an improvement. Doug at Loyning tuned the Webers and the car seems to get stronger with each mile. She continues to burn some oil but I am just happy to be driving her and will worry about that over the winter. John Curtis had his beautiful S1 at the meet after a 17 year restoration gorgeous car and great guy too. It was perfact weather so a fun weekend.
Thanks for any thoughts on the aforementioned....oh one other issue yet to be investigated. I thought that my charging sysytem was in order however after two days of driving the battery lost most of its charge. The ignition light goes right out on start up so perhaps I need to test the voltage regulator....
Cheers S.C

Tyres rubbing inside fenders/shock spring or spring platform? wheels catching/rubbing on rear wishbone outer bolt heads? balance weight catching wishbone bolt head?.....just a couple of thoughts

Hi Brian,
Thank you so much for your advice I just swung under the car and as you noted the left side outer wishbone bolt head is 1/16" from the rim where as on the left side there appeasrs to be closer to 1/4". What accounts for this discrepancy and what should one do to correct the issue.
Once again thank you for the advice !!!

They should be special thin headed bolts, has a previous owner put ordinary bolts in there?

Hi Brian,
I showed your e-mail and enclosed photo to my wife and was just marveling at how great the web can be when not used for all the other useless minutia that seems to pervade. Thank you so much for this latest info as you have ID the problem to a tee. The bolts are indeed full dimension so I will either modify or source correct shallow depth items and replace.
Thanks a million.

In the short temr, whilst looking for the shallow head item, you can file the offending corner off the bolt head; sometimes this is even necessary with the shallow head items, when particularly thick alloy wheels are fitted.
As always- remove metal advisedly.

Take your pick the S1/2 manual shows the washer and the S3/4 does not

Just a quick note to thank you all for the advice. It turned out that the offending bolt was the one at the right rear outer wishbone. It was simply not fully tightened. The problem is fixed and I can now begin to explore the sublime handling I have been so excited to experience.
THANKS!
