How Many RHD S2 SE's Are There?

PostPost by: Mazzini » Fri Jul 20, 2012 8:08 pm

Anybody know? I believe they were made in '66 after the type 36 S3 fhc was launched; most seemed to be LHD examples in the US. How many RHD's are still kicking round I wonder?

I've looked at 26/5447 and 26/5642 in the last couple years. 26/5447 had body number 4820
and 26/5642 had body number 4861, it may be that the body were numbered sequentially as they are different enough that Lotus didn't use them on regular production (that I know of). Famous Frank has one too, his is a later production one (26/57xx), it would be nice to get some other body numbers to see if they were batched like I am guessing.

Gary

Edited to reflect Andys obsevation that I double typed 26/5447

I think you made a typo above as you said 26/5447 had two different body numbers.

The body numbers do not go up like the unit numbers, I would guess it would be what ever body was either the right colour, or came to hand next prior to painting for that particular unit number.

Regarding how many S2 SE, we need Marty's time machine to go back to the 70s and tell them to take better care of the records and get them backed up before they got water damaged and dumped.

I've noticed the DVLA don't necessarily have the cars recorded as S2 S/E, so the "how many cars" database won't help either.

Only independant registries like this will give us a clue of how many are left http://elanregistry.org/index.php

Hi Andy

I fixed the double use of the unit number in my previous post. What I am saying is my wild ass guess is that there were under 100 - S2 SE Elan built. The bodies were a mongrel of sorts with a S3 or Coupe undertray and a S2 top half. They were flat floors (at least that seems to be what I have seen and others have reported) and if so they were "special" and they could not just be pulled from the next available body that was at hand. I don't know and I wasn't there but without the help of those that own them no one will know much more about them then what is posted here on the forum.

Gary, I think you're right, I think there are probably less than one hundred and the majority of those were LHD. In perhaps twenty-five years I've only come across two RHD S2 SE with all the right bits.
