Corner weight set up

PostPost by: mark030358 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:24 pm

Quick question,
What is the "ideal" weight distribution when corner weighting a Sprint? Off to have the car set up on lasers and possibly corner weighted. Only problem is how do they gat at the rear spring seats?

All answers most welcome

Cheers
Mark

Weight distribution.
Here's a brief over view from Fred Puhns book "How to make your car handle"

The car looks like it is resting on four wheels, but it may carry most of its weight on
only three of them. if the car does not carry its weight evenly distributed on the four
tires it is said to have ?weight jacked? into the chassis.
The setting of weight distribution or weight jacking is the adjustment of weight
diagonally across the car. This process is like trying to even out the legs of a
homemade chair. It requires careful measurements.

If you are driving through both right and left hand corners it is helpful if your
car handles the same, no matter which way you turn.

To balance the handling characteristics, it is important that the cars
weight be distributed in the same proportion on the left and right
hand sides.
"Reprinted under fair use common rights"

Several years ago I carried out a corner weight check of my S2, I was surprised
at the difference from side to side, at that time only the rear suspension
springs were fully adjustable, now the front springs are fully adjustable which
means the process of adjusting corner weights is relatively easy to do.
The goal of the whole exercise is to achieve even balance weights
from corner to corner.

Checking of corner weights must be done with front and rear ARB
disconnected.

If there are no means of adjusting the spring or loading, then shims of
varying thicknesses will be required to be installed under the respective
corner spring/s requiring adjustment, it's like bump steer checking... a lot
of time will be spent balancing things out.

The corner weight gauge shown in photo below is the type generally
used, but in Fred Puhns book, he even shows how to use bathroom
scales to check corner weights on a light car, so that applies to the elan.
But the proper tool is so quick and easy to use.

Ed, Not bad, only 28 lbs difference in cross weights. Is that with you in the car? Adjustable spring perches can bring that number down to a couple of pounds
