ElanRegistry - How to represent the 26R

PostPost by: Unibrain » Sun Jun 03, 2012 7:24 pm

A few people have pointed out that the Elan Registry does not accurately represent the Elan 26R. How should I record the 26R?

I'd like to suggest the following rules for the 26R

Year = 1962 to 1966
Series = S1 or S2
Variant = 26R
Chassis = xx Two digits

Does this cover the possibilities?

Here we go!!!! --Jim --any information I can find only allows for 1963 and 1964 production years and around 93 to 98 cars both kit and assembled [even Lotus cant verify the number of cars produced ], BUT some who claim to know more , and sell these cars for a very large profit profess a few more years of production -[perhaps up to 2012 ] :lol: ----but thats all Ill say on the matter and no doubt a spirited exchange will follow -My original number was 26 / 33 but to get past the bureaucrats and the new police scan cruisers used here in Ontario who scan and read your plate and receive ALL your past driver convictions and licence status , insurance and plate payment , home address , criminal record etc etc all this information is based on the 17 number registration number of your car and tied into your plate number [ this happens unknown to you I might ad]-as you drive down the road . So the Ontario licence commission insisted on more numbers and letters or I received no plate and this required 2 weeks to get on the short list [ a list Im on here with a few listers :roll: ]-ed -------- poor spellers of the world untie and edit a bunch

Hi Jim

The first 26R left the factory on 25/2/64 and was actually chassis 26-R-2
The S1 26R's are all of the same sequence 26-R-* or 26-R-**

The first S2 left the factory on 5/5/65 and was chassis 26-S2-3

The S2 26r's all followed that sequence ie 26-S2-* or 26-S2-** if higher than no 9

The last S2 left the factory on 23/7/66

I hope this helps. This can easily be confirmed by the many owners I know if required.

Cheers
Dave Hughes

and there you go :wink:page 155 of Chris Harveys book ------although 1966 is mentioned for the race win for a 26R this only means he car was active and not a 1965 66 0r 67 year car ,it was a 1964 or 1963 model car raced in the later years .So as these cars were still racing years after their build these cars were produced in the years of 1963 or 4 [Damn , sucked in again]---ed

Hi Dave -----page 105 Lotus Elan the complete story --Mike Taylor p 155 LOTUS ---chris Harvy and page 113 Lotus elan and Europa --John Bolster ---------------- the earliest referal of 26R is 63 and 64 and the last one out the door in 1966[ probably 'shop worn' :wink: first one sold MArch 1964 --so with Sir Mosses development in 1963 the cars sales spanned about 3 years and production 2 years --ed p 105 Lotus Elan the complete story Mike Taylor Guild Publishing

Hi Ed
could you scan the pages and post please I don't have all those books.

Moss's car was not a 26R and as you say 26-R-1 left the factory in March 64 but 26-R-2 left in Feb and the original owner Malcolm Wayne confirms this. He also confirms the hubs were on the wrong side and the wheels came loose during his first race!

Quote "and the last one out the door in 1966[ probably 'shop worn' first one sold MArch 1964 -"
You seem to agree with me then??
Cheers

I agree they were selling the last of a bad lot --[ J Clark cliamed it was the worst car he had ever driven ] but production was only 2 years , The cars evidently hung around the race group like a bad smell ed

Hi Ed
It was Actually Jackie Stwart who said the car was crap to drive not Jim Clark.
But that still has no bearing on the production dates which ran from early 64 till mid 66.
John Miles car which won the 1966 Autosport championship left the factory in Feb 66.

Post the info from the books please.

Do you need proof of how long she has been on the throne or do YOU KNOW its only really 2 years.
