Inspection Tag

PostPost by: zog » Tue May 15, 2012 4:25 pm

I'm finally all done stripping my Elan Coupe project and I found this inspection tag tied to the iron next to the wiper motor. I've never seen one of these so I thought I'd share it.

Hi Zog,

Interesting piece of card you have found!

Pity it's not dated...and it begs the question why the rest of it wasn't completed.

"CBU"? Something Body Unit?

Good to see the "Shut Lines" passed. I assume from that it's an S3 Coupe you have stripped...

Cheers - Richard

CBU = Chassis Body Unit.

Casalunge found a few on these on one of his Sprints.

A real rarity, thanks for posting the pictures.

On my first S2 I found one, and it had a little BRG overspray on it. It was attached with twine to the wiper motor and that's where I returned it when I put the car back together.

THIS topic and discussion is another reason I love Elans and you guys. Esoteric and relevant, a piece of paper tied to a Lotus...

Watson, some questions remain... :)

When, and how, was it tied to the wiper? Before the car had been painted and assembled? :?

If done afterwards...why hadn't other "clearance" stages been stamped? And why choose to hide it in that area?

Hi Bob

I wound never call and Early Pre airflow Coupe an S3, it cuts the value in half (dead common those horrid things :) ). This may be one of the first 200 Elan Coupes produced, what is the body number? That will get you a close approximate to the sequence, There weren't a lot of bodies sitting idle in the field in Mid February 1966, my old pre-airflow 36/5520 was a late March 1966 and was body number 1289 (lop off a thousand and you get the sequence).

I'm assuming it was attached before paint since mine had light overspray around it. So that means that at least the wiper motor and assembly was already installed in the car before paint.. By the way my old S2 was 26/5693 registered as a '66.

What sort of twine was it? I believe that; since this car was made in Norfolk, it should have been bailing twine, not that Cockerney stuff used to parcel up jellied eels.

I'll get me coat...

I think that's a great find.

Not only a bit of history, but conclusive proof that Lotus did actually inspect their cars before pushing them out to the unsuspecting punters !

(although I've never seen one on my car and it's been in model-kit form several times now. Maybe because mine wasn't inspected after all ? :)

Gary,

When I got 36/5526 home in 1878 from Arkansas & Texas, I had to do a good bit of work to get it going to be my summer daily driver for the next few years. The wiring was a mess and I spent a good bit of time under the dash. There was a small piece of paper sticking out of the heater vent that I pulled out. It was about 2 inches square and I'd seen them on newer MGs where I'd worked. It was a Blummels anti-freeze sticker, usually stuck on the inside of the windscreen, indicating that the vehicle's cooling system had been protected from freezing temps. I still have the sticker somewhere. I looked for it this morning but can't find it just yet, I'll keep looking. I assumed that it had fallen off the screen in the hot sun down south and fallen down inside the heater box.

The last line on the sticker was for the date of installation and it was late February 1966. This is much earlier, perhaps 2 months earlier than Lotus archivist had said it \'s build date was or Frank's (Sports Car World) records said it left the works. So somewhere, there is probably a photo of that side yard at Cheshunt with our Elan FHCs sittiing, side-by-side waiting for some part. I can't tell you right now what the body number is on 36-5526 because it is in a friend's barn awaiting it's turn in the shop.
